Subject: What to expect??
Date: 04/13/2008

My fatherinlaw was diag'd w/gastric adenocarcinoma in Mar '07- underwent partial gastrectomy....then in June due to stricture complications took the rest of his stomach. At the beginning of Mar this year, he'd gone to ER for what he believed to be rib issue....cancer is back, in liver too many masses to count including one that measures 9.5 cm. found spot on lung as well. Has opted not to do chemo, because it would only (maybe) reduce symptoms....extend life 1 month (again maybe)

He has to have someone with him at all times, I stay during day, my husband an only child stays evenings.....the motherinlaw is in end stage chf and at this time is in a rehab facility.....

Sorry so long, but I'm just wondering what additional symptoms to anticipate, and how to help him. We're just getting started on this journey, and he hesitates to accept any help, even though he's too weak to walk without staggering. Admitted to hospice care this past week, but wont even try the walker they provided.

I would sure appreciate any input from those of you who have been through, or are going through this.

Thanks so much

Tommy

Tommy,

Is the Hospice home based or facility based?  I am going through this with my mother right now (pancreatic).  Hospice is a supremely wonderful organization and I would suggest that you learn as much from them as possible.  It has been my experience that they are more than willing to help and will gladly answer any questions you have to the best of their ability.

As for what to expect, I can give you information on what I have gone through in a home based hospice situation.  Please let me know and I will be glad to help.  Bless you and your family for taking care of your father in law.

John

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply, it seems like years ago that i wrote that message....so much has happened, he is declining so rapidly. He fell last nite (out of bed without telling me at 2am, ) and required stitches. It is so awful.

I am sorry to hear of your mother, is she in and incare facility? We're trying to avoid that, and quite honestly, the hospice care so far is like a do it yourself nursing course. I may be too harsh at this point, been a long day.
