I'm into my second week of radiation for base of tongue and began to experience VERTIGO which I have never had in my life.  Did receive some meds but they do very little.

I am passing along something I found on the web that  seems to work .  Wanted to pass this along so that it might help someone else.

Anyone with other suggestions, please post. Thanks  to everyone, this site has been so much help to me.

The Brandt-Daroff exercise is done as follows:

  • Sit on the edge of a bed or sofa, and quickly lean to the side that causes the worst vertigo. You should end up lying on your side with your ear down.
  • Remain in this position until either the vertigo goes away or 30 seconds have passed.
  • Sit up. If this causes vertigo, wait for it to stop. Repeat the procedure on the other side.

People using this exercise usually are instructed to do 20 repetitions of the exercise at least twice a day.

Thanks for the advice!  My husband is in his second week as well (just had his 6th treatment today) and he is experiencing the same thing.  I have passed along your advice, we shall see if it helps him.

It is strenuous to do, especially when you are not feeling all that great, but it did help.  I am now in my third week and it has calmed down quite a bit so please tell him there is hope that it might just go away.  My doctors refused to give me anything saying that it is not a side effect of radiation, which as anyone in this forum will tell you is NOT true. I did try some over the counter Dramaine and that helped some too.

The ER doctor gave me Meclizine which did not help much, but my oncologist would not give me anything.  But Meclizine might be a help to your husband.
