Laser Prostatecomy Had Cancer At The Time

I was 63 when diagnosed with prostate cancer. Blood in the urine was the reason for seeking out a urologist. The doctor performed a laser prostatectomy and biopsy during the laser prostatectomy, a gleason 7 was the result The doctor told me he could do a laser treatment to stop any bleeding and get a biopsy at the same time. PSA was 4.4 before the surgery. I changed doctors to take advantage of the robotic surgery, there was a 6 month period between the laser prostatectomy and the robotic  removal of the prostate. The surgeon spent additional time removing connecting tissue during this surgery. The surgery was a success with little  pain and I was back to work in three weeks. The pathology report showed a gleason 10 and cancer was not contained within the prostate and spread to adjoining tissue. Has anyone else had a laser prostatectomy with cancer present and how did you fare? Was this a procedure I should have advoided?

If you have cancer you don't want a laser prostatecomy, everthing I read states that cancer should be ruled out before this procedure . I probably was unclear in my original message. My doctor did the biopsy and the laser prostatecomy at the same time. I feel that I should have been informed of my prostate cancer before he did this laser prostatecomy. In my case the cancer went from a gleason 7 to a gleason 10 in the six months between the LP and the RP. I was trying to see if anybody else has had the LP when cancer was present.

The proceedure or similar one you speak of is a newer treatmen, Maybe. Did you have it in the USA? Sis you have Proton Beam therapy? If so Where. All I have read so far is that it can return post any of those treatments. I do not think it was the proceedure but your Gleason score was the clue. A gleason of 7, shows that the probability of spread is high. It is microscopic but it is still there. Did you have a body scan, and a bone scan pre removal?  Are you speaking of the Proton Beam or the freezing.  My husband is having the Proton Beam surgery at Loma Linda University Hospital in Riverside.  This is really a great way to have it done. MD Anderson has a proton unit, also one in Indiana, Boston and Florida. LLU has had one for 20 years and these other hospitals have just come on board.  Unfortunatley the wait at LLU is 3-5 months.  As you noted it was 6 months wait. Did your doctor put you on anti hormone therapy while waiting.  My husband has the exact same score but his doctor put him on anti hormone therapy (casodex 50 mg and proscar daily) when his PSA dropped from 21.7 to 3.7 he went on 25mgs per day. His PSA his holding at the lower level.So be aggressive when treating your spread, I will send you aprivate note to put you on to some additional things and then if you are intereseted you can check them out. I am sorry you are suffering but this does happen. I will be interested to hear wether or not you had anti hormone therapy pre and post op. all the best mms

Hi mms - I did have a bone and bladder scan and also a cystoscopy before the surgeon did the "BPH" and biopsy . The scans and cystoscopy were ok.  I did not receive hormone therapy during the six months I waited for my new surgeon to remove my prostate. I had dropped the  initial doctor  and it took me 3 months to get a appointment with the new doctor and another 3 months for the robotic surgery. Proton beam therapy seems the way to go for a lot of prostate cancer patients.  One of the main benefits for me was the patholgoy report on the removed prostate. It showed that agressive treaments were now necessary. I had 39 radiation treatments and hormone therapy for the last year. Hormone therapy continues.   Psa results are good.  Thank you for your imput and good luck with your decisions.
