Any Oncologist Recommendations For Ny

My mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1998. It is in stage four and has been on many different treatments. Her current Oncologist does not want to remove tumor and we want a second opinion. Her blood count just recently went from 12000 to 19000. Anyone know of a ovarian cancer specialists in the area?

 My mom was diagnosed with a stage 3C ovarian carcinosarcoma last summer and was treated at RWJ in New Brunswick, NJ but she is now switching to Fox Chase in Philly.  We have heard very good things about Martee Hensley at Memorial Sloan Kettering and Gerald Rosen at St. Vincents.  Hang in there as best you can and all the best to you and your mom.

Maybe your Oncologist do not want to remove the tumors because they want it to get smaller, my mom also is stage 4 ovarian cancer and our oncologist won't remove the tumors because it spreaded to some parts of her organ, they want it to get smaller.

I don't really know if your Oncologist reason will be like our Oncologist but if you want to look for a second opinion then I heard this hospital SLOAN-CATERING, I think it's one of the best there in NY.

I don't know where you are in NY, but I would recommend contacting Dr. Kunle Odunsi at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY, who is in the process of doing several different ovarian cancer vaccine trials including one for women who have recurred. I did the phase 1 trial of the NY-ESO-1 vaccine and I am still in remission 3 - 1/2 years later.

Dr. Odunsi is an outstanding gynecological Oncologist and a very caring and compassionate man. He is an excellent surgeon. He does a lot of research on ovarian cancer and may be able to help your mom with some ideas on new treatments.

I agree with an earlier poster that Sloan-Kettering is the top place to go for cancer treatment in NYC, however, it is difficult to get an appointment there.  They want you to forward them several different tests and then wait 3-4 weeks to see a doctor, if they accept you.  My gyno-oncologist is Dr. Paul Liu in Valley Stream, Long Island.  He is an excellent surgeon and the chief of gynecological oncology at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside.  I was diagnosed with ovarian and uterine cancers 2 years ago, April 2006.  Dr. Liu performed the surgery and oversaw my chemo treatment (Carboplatin and Taxol).  I just had my check-up yesterday.  CA 125 has remained at 6.8.

If you are on Long Island - try Dr. John Lovecchio at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. He is a renowned Gynecological Oncologist. He is a surgeon. For my medical oncologist (for chemo) I use Western Suffolk Hemotology/Oncology. I was a stage IV when diagnosed in April '04. I have been doing differnet chemos for a while now, but I still feel pretty good and really have hardly any pain. I love these Doctors because they listen (REALLY LISTEN) to their patients and their needs. They also have a fantastic facility and staff. I cannot say enough about them. Best of luck to you.

I also went to Dr. LOveccio at North Shore Manhasset on LI.  He is not only the head of the Gyn/Surgery/Oncology dept. there, he is a very caring doctor.  As for an oncologist, I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Shapira, who is at the Don Monti Division of Medical Oncology (across the street from LIJ if you know LI)  She is such a wonderful, caring person, who treats the whole patient, not just the disease, and, most importantly, she LISTENS to you and cares about how you are doing on every wau.   Good luck...Jayne
