I had a bad cold and cough and have been coughing up a lot of blood at present has anyone experience this coughing up blood?
I would appreciate a response please.

Hi,

My mother coughed up blood for a while, after her radiation treatments.  We think it was due to irritation, although we never had that confirmed.  It didn't last.  Good idea to have it checked.  Good luck to you.    Roz

Thank you for you response Rosalind, My radiation treatment was over Feb.2006, this cough is taking a toll out of me and it's very scary to see blood coming out of my mouth. My CAT scan is scheduled on May 1/08 and they are hoping that it is from a ruptured vein from coughing too much. How old is your mom by the way? I am 53 years old non smoker.

Hi Alana,

I'm glad you've had such success with Tarceva.  My mother tried it as a first line of treatment (part of a study for Dana Farber), but it didn't work for her.  She died recently this Feb. at the age of 79.

Granted, the cough she had was from a different source, but we had many different medications we were treating it with.  She used a nebulizer and had a very potent cough medication (I think called Hycodan).  In addition, we gave her Tesslon pearls and Mucinex on a regular basis.  Also, regular accupuncture treatments.  Her bouts of coughing had longer and longer amounts of time in between, and eventually disappeared all together.  Are you taking any of these meds for your cough?  I feel you should not have to wait until May to get relief.    Roz

My mother (71, stage III NSCLC) also coughed up a little bright red blood towards the end of her radiation which was from irritation but a few years ago, prior to her diagnosis, she had a bad cold with a lot of coughing and ended up coughing up blood which was from a broken blood vessel caused by the coughing.  She was given something for the cough and it went away.  I'd definately try to get in to see a doctor as soon as you can, especially if it's "a lot" of blood as you mentioned.  It's better to get an answer for your own peace of mind and maybe get something stronger for the cough.

Hi

My mum was diagnosed with lung cancer on Friday 18th April, we don't know which type she has at the moment.  But like you she has a very nasty cough and keeps coughing up blood.  From what I have found out if the blood is dark in colour it's 'old' blood (my mum's is dark the hospital don't seem too worried about it) which isn't quite so bad but if it's bright red then it's new blood which isn't good.

Sorry if this isn't much use to you.

Some one recommended that my mum takes Zeolite.  It's suppose to build up your immune system, give you an appetite and energy.  I am looking into this now.  May be it's worth giving it a go yourself.

best wishes

C.

To anyone coughing up blood, you need to Google "disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)" now.

My mother, who has Stage 4 non-small-cell lung cancer, was coughing up blood recently. The doctors thought it was just the progression of the disease. She ended up in the ER due to low oxygen levels and shortness of breath. She was admitted to the hospital thankfully because that night she went unconscious and they called a Code Blue and had to resuscitate her and intubate her.

The ER doc who intubated her thought she may have had a blood clot in the lung. There is a test you can do to find out but they didn't do it because the remedy for a blood clot is blood thinners. When you're coughing up blood, they won't give you blood thinners.

Thank the Lord, she had great doctors and was in the hospital when she went unconscious. She is now at home, on oxygen, and getting radiation treatments to her lungs, every day, M-F, for four weeks.
