Is this Really Necessary?

So I just found out yesterday through a Biopsy, that I have moderate to severe dysplasia. They want me to do the LEEP procedure. The doctor told me there is a chance that my body will cure itself (because I'm only 21 she said I have a better chance) But I'm scared about taking that kind of risk with something that could turn into cancer. I did some research and there is a good chance if i were to get pregnant(if my cervix doesn't get scarred)that I would deliver premature if I follow through with this procedure. There are so many things in life I want to do and having children is number 1 on my list, granted it wouldn't be anytime soon, but I have to think about my future! Is this something that I really need? I plan on getting a second opinon, but there are so many questions I have, and so many if's **Blah**

You have to do whatever is necessary to preserve YOU, if you want a future.  Keep that in mind.

Best to you

I totally understand the desire to have children, however if you are not alive it won't happen either.  Make sure you do everything to keep yourself cancer free so that you can be able to raise a family, whether your own or adoptive or harvest of your eggs with a surrogate.  It certainly isn't fair to try and protect your ability to have kids to find out you have untreatable cancer.

Do you have paps every year?  Was this the first one that came back abnormal with the moderate to severe finding?  If this was the first one you've had abnormal, I'd get a second opinion for sure.  It wouldn't hurt.  From reading up on dysplasia, it seems the procedure to be done is what your doctor has suggested for the moderate to severe range.

I've had two paps come back within a year that have been abnormal with one pap inbetween with no furhter changes.  Now it's mild dysplasia again.........

Good luck & report your findings if you don't mind.  We'll learn from each other.

Make sure your see a gyn oncologist, not just a gyn, before you have any procedure.  Ask if there is a doc interested in preserving fertility in young cancer patients before you have any procedure.
