Hi my husband is on his twelveth day of taking sutent, and so far all has been really good, except a few side effects which he has accepted.

However yesterday and today I noticed his blood pressure has started to rise. We don't see his Doctor till tuesday for our first blood check and I am getting conflicting messages from, chemists, and a silver chain nurse which we saw on day two. I think Its because no one really knows much about this trial.

 So does anyone taking Sutent 50mg... know what a high blood pressure reading would be?

Thank you, and I do hope you are all coping as well as my husband.

I have been on Sutent for 3 cycles. I originally had high blood pressure and was on meds, but then while on Sutent bp climbed 140, 150 ove 90's. Mu oncologist added more bp meds and bp was still high.  he has doubled bp meds for cycle 4 which starrts today.

As you may know bp issues is a know side effect and as you read up on it can cause heart issues. I do not know your medical condition but it might be woorth a phone call to your doctor.

Good luck.

Thank you Charlie,

I have called our Doctor and am waiting for a reply.

My husband has had a RCC kidney and RCC node operation on March 13th, then a RCC lung operation the 7thApril which was stopped because his left lung kept collapsing. Both lungs have RCC but the largest tumour is in the right.

My GP dosent know Sutent and said 200/120 is classed as high, Our chemist said 145/90 is high and the nurse who came with his Oxygen said anything over 90 call an ambulance.

This is only our twelve day on Sutent, and he has been really coping well its just me getting a little panicky not knowing whats the correct rating, especially when no one knows about sutent, thats what made me look on this site, because I thought someone might know.

Anyway thank you again and I do hope you have good success with your fourth stint.

Killian,

I am not a doctor but I think your chemist and nurse are closer to being right on the high blood pressure.  Have you been to www.kcalist.org?  There are a lot of informative posts on there about the various treatments and side effects.  Also some on patient support and caregiver help.

My husband was diagnosed in Sept 2004 and has been fighting hard ever since.  I understand your being anxious - I am the same way.  And that is good because they need our help.

Wishing you the best.

Thank you Chris,

I will go on that site and have a look, we have only been on this road since Feb 8th 2008, when my husband first complained of a sore side. However as you would know... its just so frightening not knowing what is right and what is wrong. Our Gp is in Germany, but will be back on May 20th so I might get some support then.

My husbands blood pressure soared yesterday afternoon and i was close to calling an ambulance but he didnt want me making a fuss, thankfully its down this morning back to 135/95, So i am a bit calmer.

Anyway Chris thank you again and I hope your husband keeps up the fight. My husband dreams he is kicking these little black things out of the tree. Which gives us a laugh. So he is fighting also.

God Bless to you both

Killian,  I just thought I would share this info with you.  It is from the manual that came with our blood pressure monitor:

Normal = less than120/less than 80

Prehypertension = 120-139/80-89

Stage I Hypertension = 140-159/90-99

Stage II Hypertension = 160+/100+

Hope that helps.

Thank you so much.
 That is a great help, I have written the blood pressures down for future reference. Its just a bit scary when this is my husbands first session on Sutent. Day 15 tomorrow.

We will just be really happy when we get to see his oncolgist on tues, so we can bombard him with questions. Also our Gp will be back this month.

Regards and thank you again

Hello Chris

 Hope your oncologist visit was as good as ours, and that Doug got back on Torisel.

My husbands blood counts were all good, so they took him off the steroids and nausea tablets that day. We thought we must be dreaming.However we quickly came down from the clouds, by wed lunchtime, he was terribly sick and couldnt breathe, so we went back on the medicine.

Our oncologist is very good and I know he would be happy for us to continue. We have three days to finish this first cycle and we cant wait. Don't really know what to expect with his two weeks off though. It will be good for him just to regain some energy, but apart from those side effects he is coping well.

I am glad you two are doing a little better.  Doug is still on hold for treatment.  He has some other health issues that they are trying to manage before he goes back on.  His onc is going to do a CT and bone scan again in 2 months.  The cardiologist has increased his meds for the BP.  It has come down somewhat.  They are also trying to get his heart rate down.

Thanks for asking and let us know how things are going.

Chris
