Final Stages of Lung Cancer

My sister-in-law was diagnosed 1 year ago yesterday with adenocarcenoma lung cancer, Stage IV. This month she has had fluid asperated from her lung twice, 2 liters then 1&1/2 liters. I see her condition worsening. I have been her main caregiver over the past year, although her children help out quit a bit. She was admitted to the hospital again today with fluid in her percardial space. I feel so helpless she is only 55 years old. Last September the pulmonologist gave her 3-6 months. Her oncologist just keeps saying "I am very optimistic." They want to put a tube so her lung can drain and they can put the medicine directly through the tube. Thanks for any input. Take care one and all and God Bless, Cami

Hi, my name is Joanne and my mom who is now 81 was diagnosed with the same type of lung cancer back in November of 04 the gave her 6 months, she was a wreck they had to tap her lung 3 times and then did some surgery to put some talc in the see if the lung would stick to the rib wall...that was a mess and didnt work...she was on oxegyn 24-7 and it didnt look good.. she started on Tarceva 150 milagrams daily in January and she is doing great..she just had a pet scan last month and things look better...sheis off the oxegyn and has been for some time. She is one of the lucky ones who hasnt gotten a rash very badly...this med targets the cells themselves and stops the growth..they say it is not a cure just a prolonger...what ever...it is working for her ...you should look into it...Good luck to you...J

Lung Cancer/talc Procedure

Hi my name is Denise and my father age 69 was dx in October 04 with Stage IV NSCLC. He is going to have the talc procedure performed this week. You said it was a mess when your Mother had it done. Could you tell me what kind of things to expect. The doctors gave him a choice between a tude coming out of his shoulder to drain fluid or the talc procedure. I have been encouraging him to go for the talc so he doesn't have to deal with the tude. I'm questioning my recommendation now. Thanks for any information you can give me.

Terena, Thank you for responding and I am so sorry about your mom. The strength we have to get through this comes from the Man above. My sis in law had the talc inserted through tube on Thursday of last week. She has 3 tubes coming out of her chest on the right side. There are 3 pockets that were left where the talc didn't work. So she keeps producing fluid. My heart breaks for her she is such a courageous woman. Thank you for the prayers as well you and yours are in mine. Camille

Thank you so much for responding. I am sorry the talc didn't work for your mom, but glad the tarceva is helping!!!. The talc is a fairly new procedure (about 3 years). As in every single procedure they never give you any guarantees. However my sister in law is terminal the cancer has spread back into her chest wall and into the other lung. We pray for her to be pain free and peaceful. May God bless you and yours. Camille

From what I just went through with my sis in law the tube (s) are incerted in the chest wall or rib cage (her case) the pleura is then drained and talc is inserted. If there are any pockets (s) then the tubes stay in until they are drained to a minumal level. I wish you and your family good luck and you are in my prayers. Camille

My mother was admitted to the hospital last week because of fluid in her lungs. She had the fluid extracted by needle, she currently has a chest tube in and when I visited her last, the talc procedure was being discussed. She was diagnosed a year ago with stage IV NSCLC and it's only been downhill since then. Any advice or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Hi it's Joanne. The talc procedure itself went okay although there was more cancer in there than they expeceted and so they didnt think it would "stick" to well but she it has helped some. But they tried to take her off the ventalator to soon and she couldnt breathe on the own and she ended up in the ICU for a day and then there was a hole in the lung..happens alot they say. so they had to keep the drain in longer than expected...

i have just read your message and all the answers you had, we are beginning all this, my husband has had almost 2 liters out of his chest and they have told him to put the powder, he has many little spots all over his right lung but it has been found adenocarcinoma in the fluid so they didn't take the lung and are going to begin with chemotherapy and then with tarceva, the answers you got help me to know more, thank you are already helping new ones too.
