Subject: Side affect using Emend

My friend who has been battling stage IV colon cancer for a little over four years has been having more trouble with side effects due to the Chemo. He is currently on Camptosar, Avastin and Erbitux. He took a break from the Erbitux due to the nasty rash but is back on a weaker dose. After four years the side affects are starting to get less tolerable. Especially the nausea. His last treatment, they started a new med called Emend. He takes one pill the day of treatment and then one pill a day for two days. They seemed to help with the Nausea but caused hiccups that lasted for almost two days. He says that was almost worse than the nausea.

My question is this....Has anyone been on Emend or know people that have, that have had this side effect and do the side effects happen every time, or maybe the body adjusts to the pills and the hiccups don't happen every time?????????

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Hi,

That's so funny because I did get hiccups during chemo.  I also took Emend & don't know if that's what caused the hiccups, but maybe so.  I don't get them anymore, now that I'm done w/ chemo.  This may sound weird, but I noticed anytime I bit into a hamburger/hamburger bun or any kind of thick bread, I'd instantly get the hiccups!  Very weird, but it was real & it no longer is happening!

Hi, Thanks for the response. My friend also has gotten minor hiccups from the different chemo regimens. This seems to be Emend related as it was very severe. It started the day after chemo and about ten hours after taking the second Emend pill and they lasted pretty much non stop for almost two days.

I got hiccups from emend. I took it for 15 cyele of cheme and was off for a year then got hiccups when I restarted emend a year later. Then switched to anzement and got hiccups for two days. Went off and just uses the aloxi given with cheme and took ginger capsules 2 3-4 time a day. Controled my nauses with no side efect.

As for erbutux. I was on panitumamab for 9 months the rash was horible. I use cetaphil lotion, elidel cresm rx, and tetracycline rx. This helped a great deal.
