Subject: Lymph nodes after 1 year
Date: 05/06/2008

Hello, Can anyone tell me if they have experienced a lymph node becoming swollow after a full treatment for squamous cell of the throat? My dad had a neck discection, radiation treament and chemo and has had negitive blood work, pet scans for a year now.  We have seen a small swollen lymph node on his neck now and are having it checked by his surgeon.  Wondering if others have had an experience with having to have another lymph node removed after treatment or any inof on this?

thank you

Hi, roughly 3 1/2 yrs ago, I had base of tongue cancer. Had the neck disection and 1/3 of tongue removed and reattached the good. roughly 2 1/2 yrs ago, got Melanoma on the left side and had the Sentenial Node removed which came back clear.  Roughly, 1 1/2 yrs ago, I felt a small lump which was I thought another start of cancer under my left jaw area.

I thought it was a Lymph node starting to get bigger, the Surgeon checked it out and I am fine. Good on you both for continuely checking. Hopefully, your Doctors are spacing your visits between them as to have a set of eyes in him every 3 months for the first 2 yrs. My Doctors have switched to seeing me every 6 months, but I split it so I see one of them in 3 months intervals.

Take Care

Male diagnosed with stage 4 SCC of the tongue and right lymph node in December. Had the chest port inserted along with a PEG tube. Had the right radial neck dissection, completed chemotherapy 2 weeks ago, still have 2 weeks of radiation therapy at the booster stage ( did my 6 weeks of heavy lifting). Saw the oncologist for radiation and we noticed a small lump under the jaw area. Conferred with the surgeon who did the neck dissection and he stated that it could be some scar tissue from the operation (2 months past the op). He stated he removed the lymph nodes so that is not the issue in my case. Also mentioned that what is there is easy to remove should it come to that. Biopsy, if needed can be done as in patient-in the office-no hospital stay. As in my case, yours may just be some dead cells or scar tissue. I always advise getting it checked out thoroughly. All the best!
