Subject: Help Re: Radiation
Date: 05/06/2008

My husband started radiation treatments yesterday and temodar; he was diagnosed with AAIII in March.  Surgery at Duke, over 90% resection, some deficits, but working, playing softball, etc.  God is blessing him.  Anyway, he started radiation on a machine called a tomoTherapy machine.  They are doing CT scans every other day; actually they did one yesterday and today.  But, are saying they will need to do one 3 times a week to make sure the radiation is going where it is suppose to.  Is that normal?  He is already getting so much radiation from the treatments, but now with these CT scans to his whole brain, it kind of surprised me.  What is everyone elses experience?

Thanks,

Debbie

I'm no radiologist, but it sounds normal to me. When I had rads they 'took pictures' every few days to make sure the radiation was hitting the right target. With the diagnosis we've all received, a little additional radiation to the brain is the least of our problems. Try to remember it is the most effective defense against the cancer returning (other than surgery, of course.)

I think its great that he as a scane every few days, that way they can keep a good eye on it. I had radiation 6 years ago and I wish they would have done that for me. I hope everything goes well for you guys I know it can take alot out of a family.

My wife had a CT scan every Monday during the 6 weeks of radiation. She had IMRT radiation, I am not sure what a tomoTherapy machine is or how that differs from the type of radiation my wife received. Best of luck to you.

I had a week of Tomotherapy following 3 weeks on the linear accelerator.  The CT scans are a necessary component for Tomo.  I've had no growth in my AA3 tumor since the end of radiation MRI in October of 2006.
