My Dad is in his fourth week of radiation and has very bad mouth sores.  We've been able to maintain his weight so far through Ensure, Scandi Shake Mix and Boost, etc.  Does anyone have any good recipes for shakes that use veggies as opposed to fruits?  He is no longer willing to drink anything with citrus/tomatoes.  We are desperately looking for some good recipes!

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi, Stephanie.

My favorite recipe, adapted from one the nutitionist at Regions Cancer Center gave me, is a chocolate protein shake. I still have it for breakfast although I have ben able to eat normally for some time now.

1 1/2 cups "fortified milk"

1 or 1 1/2 envelopes Carnation Instant Breakfast (vanilla)

Dove dark chocoloate syrup to taste, about 1 tbsp.

3 or 4 scoops vanilla ice cream

2 tsp glutamine supplement powder

1 heaping tsp Folgers instant coffee (optional)

run it in a blender, makes 2 12 oz glasses full.

(fortified milk= 1/2 gal whole milk + 2 cups dried milk, mix up in blender, store in a pitcher in the fridge)

I lived on these for about 8 weeks during treatment, they went down when nothing else would, and I could TASTE them when I couldnt taste anything else. Hope this helps.

Best wishes

Mike

Probably not as healty as Mike's mix, but I did it just to keep my weight up normal.

12 oz. of 2% milk, 1 banana,  1 Klondike no sugar added bar and blend.

I could taste the banana and the little chocolate bits. As mentioned by Mike, it just felt good to taste something.

You might try grape juice, I get painful sores if I bite the inside of my mouth and do not disinfect it fairly quickly.  I accidently discovered that grape juice did not sting hardly or at all.  To me it almost had a numbing effect.  Try just putting vegies in a blender with chicken broth or beef broth, I make soup that way sometimes, and it is alot easier to clean than a juicer is.  This web site mentions an herbal supplement that was seen to help with radiation/chemo mouth sores, but you will have to look through all of them as I do not remember whcih one it was.  Also, you should check that herbs drug interaction, side effects and contraindications and perhaps with your doctor.  Most supplements and herbs are not put through good studies or trials, and are not regulated like regular medicines are.
