Subject: Distended abdomen and best resting position

Hi all,

I am looking after my mum who is in her final days with a cervical cancer spread to lungs, liver and kidneys. She has severely DISTENDED ABDOMEN which must be causing a lot of distress. She is under a lot of morphine and not able to talk but only responds with slight nod... What is the best position to lay her to help her have least amount of discomfort? ANY suggestions will be appreciated. The palliative care nurses think a tap may be only a step towards making her go through more trouble and pain. Has anyone gone through a similar predicament?

I prefer sleeping on my side.  I have to keep switching during the night because my hips start hurting, unless I can put a small pillow between my knees to elevate the top leg a bit.  I noticed water pills help when my stomach starts feeling too distended.  If she's on her back elevate her head and shoulders so there's not too much pressure on her stomach area.  Definately don't sleep on stomach though.
