Memorial Sloan-Kettering investigators are also studying sorafenib (Nexavar®) for use in multiple myeloma patients with abnormal kidney function. An oral multiple kinase inhibitor that affects tumor growth and angiogenesis (blood vessel formation), sorafenib stops cancer cells from producing a signal that is necessary for their multiplication, according to research findings.

This came from the Sloan Kettering site and I'm interested because of my recent kidney problems.  I'd like to talk to anyone who has been using Nexavar about their experiences with this drug.  Any help gratefully appreciated.  Many thanks, Cath

I am taking Nexavar for liver cancer.  It is supose to stop the growth of tumors by blocking the blood supply.  I have been taking it since September.  Side effects aren't nice, but my tumor hasn't grown.  Actually I don't know for sure if it would have without the medicine or not.  I found out in July 2007, had two chemoembolizations to the liver in August.  Then started Nexavar in September.  I was told that chemo doesn't work for primary liver tumors so I'm taking this instead.   It was first used for kidney cancer then they tried it on liver cancer and it helped a lot of people so they quit the trials so they could let everyone have access to the medicine.

Sorry, I guess you really wanted to know about side effects.  There are a lot but they seem to come at different times so your not hit all at once.  First I'd get very itchy red skin everywhere except face.  The calluses on my feet started peeling off.  I had very severe diarhea for a while, started taking imodium for a while, lost a lot of weight.  Now the stomach problems come and go.  I had very red painful joints, but only one at a time, the next week it would be my other wrist, then my ankle, etc.  I also lost most of my hair, the pamphlet said some people get hair thinning, but mine was almost gone and came back in super curly and short, it still hasn't grown anymore.  Some people tell me the hair loss could have been from the chemoembolizations, but I was told there's minimal side effects with that because it's directly in the tumor not your whole body.  Who knows, maybe it was the combination of both.  The only side effect that made me think about quitting was the diarhea.  But now my weight is stable and the diarhea has subsided, still upset stomach most of the time though.  If it's keeping me alive though it's totally worth it.  I have two girls, one is 10 the other 14.  I would like to get them through their teen years at least.

Thanks Sue, this sounds very promising!  The exact same thing happened with the trials of Rivlimid which is the drug I am currently taking for Multiple Myeloma -- and it has been fantastic for me.  However it is only suppose to be effective for 15 months and I've already been on it for 21 months, so I'm just looking for new drugs which might be useful when the Revlimid stops working.  And because I have recently had kidney problems, I thought that this one - Nexacar - might be the next one for me!!  I'll do some more research -- just in case!!  Many thanks, Cath
