Subject: Mucosal Melanoma - anyone survived and if so - now?

I have a sister with mucosal melanoma. Diagnosed in 2005. Tumor removed in 2006 with an eye and 1/2 her palate.

She has had chemo and radiation and surgery.  The tumors are coming like crazy - daily.  Some will have to be removed by radiation next week.  Only chemo kept the tumors at bay but you can't stay on the chemo.  She is on pain killers now and we've contacted hospice - this is a very awful disease.  Won't eat or drink much.  It feels like the end is close

But - I can't help but reach out - anyone - any news?  Even bad news - I just don't want to feel I failed to find the one cure.

 Thanks a lot. RMS

I am really sorry to hear about your sister.  It is an awful, awful disease.  I wish your sister the very best throughout her journey.  You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

My sister's fiance passed just under 2 years ago from melanoma.  It seems once the tumors take hold as in your sisters case hospice is the best thing you can do for her.  There mission is to help not only her but the family understand the process that is taking place and to cope and to make your sister as comfortable as possible and given her some dignity in the process.  I'm so sorry she has had to deal with all this.  I will say a prayer for all of you.

My aunt has mucosal melanoma (vagina) and was diagnosed in Dec 05.  She received her best results while taking Taxol and Avastin (May 07- Apr 08).  It appears the disease became immune to the Taxol and Avastin after 1 year.  She in now taking Gleevec.
