my 28 yr old daughter is now on zolodex implants after a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation 3 years ago. she is supposed to stay on it till she is 30 & she is over the side effects. i.e hot flushes, depression and lack of hormones. (she is just getting into a new relationship after the breakdown of her marriage). cause she has no health cover most times when she sees the doctor they are usually training and don't know a great deal!  (she thinks). i worry what will happen if and when she stops her treatment. anyone have any ideas/suggestions? i would appreciate everything! she has never been to support groups (she thinks they are all older!) so we really don't know much!her cancer was estrogen positive.  thanks

I'm not sure what it is that your daughter is taking.  She was extremely young to have to deal with BC.  I believe you said she had estrogen positive BC which means that if she still has her ovaries she is probably taking something to suppress the estrogen in her body.  I take it that she is not currently on chemo??  If they are suppressing the estrogen then this would cause symptoms of menapause even in a 28 year old.  This would be the reason for the hot flashes and possibly the depression but being diagnosed with BC at such a young age and feeling that she is alone could also be the cause of her depression.  Yes, as most woman are older at the time of their BC diagnosis it is not always the case.  When I was going through radiation therapy there was a 22 year old who had to have a mastectomy.  She just needs to contact the cancer support group or large hospital and ask about one specific to young women.  She should continue seeing her doctor's who would monitor her care and follow up tests.  I'm sorry she doesn't have health insurance but again I would contact the American Cancer Society or similar organization and see what can be done to insure she gets the proper care and medications for the treatment and follow up of her BC to insure she remains cancer free.  Best of luck to you and her!
