Subject: SNUC prognosis
Date: 05/18/2008

My husband was diagnosed with SNUC 4 months ago- he has undergone 40 IBRT treatments and 3 rounds of Cisplatin and 5FU.  Yes the Cisplatin is NASTY stuff.  He has had so much trouble with nausea.  They tried everything for nausea the first round and nothing helped.  The second round he had Emend and that helped a lot.  Still trouble with nausea, but not as bad.  He has a feeding tube into his jejunum (the g tube did not help-still nauseated and vomiting) food and liquids-even water doesn't taste good.  He goes in for IV fluids 3 times a week and Zofran IV as well as orally yet.  He also has a lot of trouble with mucus in his mouth and still a lot of sores and blisters in his mouth as well- this is nearly 3 weeks since his treatments have finished. His nose is terribly stuffed up-very hard to breathe. He also his difficulty with vision in the eye on the side of the tumor since the treatments.  He had a CT scan -the tumor has shrunk from 2.9cm by 1.9 cm to 1.9 x .9 cm and will have PET scan on Monday.- we are scared to death about the results.  I don't know how much more he can take.  It scares me when I read about the prognosis of SNUC.  My husband has not gotten on the internet like I have and has not seen all of this-probably a good thing!  Anything positive anyone has read or experianced would be appreciated.

Scootie:

Under one of the Head and Neck subsections, I once read about a SNUC organization.  Were you able to locate such a group?  I found SPOHN for head and neck and they were very helpful.

I understand your concern, but I have a thought for you.  Our cancer center social worker told us the following story:  Her son, then age seven, was diagnosed with leukemia.  She was told he would have a 12% chance of survival.  She immediately thought the same thing we did "oh well we will definitely make up the 12%.  Someone has to, it might as well be us!"  He is now 26 years old.

My best to you.

My 17 year old son completed his chemo and radiation treatments on  April 30th.  He didn't have any nausea problems from the Cisplatin, but did have a lot of nausea 3 weeks after the treatment ended.  Like your husband said, even water tasted bad to my son.  He could eat or drink nothing.  The doctor put him on a small dose of decadron (steriods) and restarted him on Nexium.  Within a couple of days we was feeling much better, and asking me to make him something to eat.  The nausea ended, and he is gaining weight.  We go tomorrow for an MRI and meet with the doctors to see what the next step will be.  Try Glutamine powder from the health good store (GNC) for the mouth sores.  Mix it with whatever he can drink.  It helped by son quite a bit.  Good luck to you and your husband.  If you keep looking on this website, you will find positive outcomes.  Our doctor told us of a patient he has that was diagnosed with SNUC when she was about 74.  She was treated, and is still alive today, in her 80s.
