Hi all.  We are about halfway through my husbands treatment for stage 4 SSC, primary in tonsil.  He's completed 18 of the 33 IMRT (radiation) treatments, and has done two of the three Cisplatin (chemo) infusions.

Don't know if this may be helpful to anyone else, but we are using plastic spoons and forks to help with the taste issues he's having.  It's still not what it used to be, but with the plastic the taste of foods are a little more 'normal' to him.  Just thought I would throw that out there for anyone who might want to give it a try!

Foods he's been able to tolerate desptie thrush and sores - cottage cheese mixed with fruit coctail (you can use peaches, pears, etc.), bean and bacon soup (he throws a couple pieces of buttered bread in the soup to get mushy), ice cream (anything but chocolate), smoothies (made with a little bit of egg whites for extra protein - called 'All Whites'), rice (mixed with butter and a little sugar).

Warm thoughts to you all -

Good idea with the plasticware. I had issues with a metallic taste during treatment too, but I was mostly on a liquid diet, I had chocolate protein shakes when I wasnt using my peg tube.

Try using those microwave steamer bags, you can find them in the grocery store. I found that steamed veggies work very well for me, they retain enough moisture and the flavor and texture are very pleasing to someone with drymouth. Also, active culture yogurt and acidophilous supplements will help with the thrush, as well as giving him some more flavors to try.

Tell him to keep up the good work, he's halfway there.

Best wishes to you both,

Mike

Thanks, I will give the plastic a try.

I have found that my husband likes very soft boiled eggs and Chinese egg flower soup that I have been getting at the restaurant. The corn starch makes is gooey and it goes down pretty good.

He did not get the peg and he is doing better than I ever thought he would. He has 5 radiation sessions out of 32 to go. He finished his 7 Erbitux treatments . That went very smoothly, no side effects just some pimples.

Take care
