I too have a thyroid nodule that I am getting biopsied on the 8th.  I have been having chest pains and had a CAT scan and they found nodues in my lungs as well.  They plan to wait and scan them again in 6 months to see if they grow.  I also have swollen glands on my neck and develop severe infections in my lungs everytime I catch a cold.  I am anxiously awaiting my biopsy and the results.  How are you doing?

I am wondering how long it has been since your diagnosis - How old are you now? and how is your tg level?

I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the age of 23, total thyroidectomy as well as 6 lymph nodes removed.  During the last 12 years I went through RAI 3 times only to find out that it wasn't working.  The spots that they found on my lungs were about a year after diagnoses, about 20 of them all together.  All small MMs in size- they have not shown any signs of growing for 7 years. Cancer in dormant stage until April of last year.  I went through a series of Alcohol Ablation for treatments for reoccurance in 4 lymph nodes.  I was also told that thyroid cancer was the best cancer to get because it was highly treatable.

If you have multiple lung nodules then most likely they are thyroid cancer deposits in the lung.  I will get RAI treatment soon and monitor the progress to see if they disappear.  IF not, there is something call cyberknife external beam radiosurgery.   It is capable of eliminating 3 to 4 lung nodules with a few treatment.  I spoke with doctor William Harter at Georgetown university hospital, and he is very confident at such treatment.   Lung local control can done if RAI isnt working or working well.

LOOK INTO ALL TREATMENT OPTIONS.  DO NOT LET ENDOCRINE DOCS TELL YOU THAT IT IS VERY SLOW GROWING.

if you have questions of suggestions as we are on the same boat.

Good Luck....

Danny,

I hope, all is well with you.  My sister has five PTC metastases in her lung.  I like to know if you have done cyberknife EBR radiosurgery and how successful was it. It looks like the RAI is not working on my sister.  Please let me know.  I am praying for your full recovery.

Best Regards

I had a radical thyroidectomy when I was 22.  It's been 21 years, never a cure, but have done pretty well.  I just had a chest x-ray at my chiropractor's and there are four spots on my lungs.  He's confirmed the spots are not on my ribs or spine, and has sent them out for review.  Has anyone else with differentiated thyroid cancer had a metastasis after so many years?

Hi AK -

how high is your tg (suppressed or off meds)?? This should give a good idea about whether the lung nodules are to be suspected.

I also have pain in my abdomen and have had a complete scan.  I was told that hypothyroidism can cause colon spasms and they figure out that it what I have.  One my dosage of Synthyroid got corrected, it took about a month for them to go away.

I also have lung nodules that were found during the abd. CT scan.  So, I have had a lung scan and a Pulmonary Function Test and I am awaiting those results.

Understand one thing about lung nodules:  if these are thyroid cancer, then they are not lung cancer.  As such, the cancer should show on your Thyrogen count.  My Thyrogen count is fine so my Endo is convinced that I no longer have any thyroid cancer cells in my body (had my TT 10/07 and my RAI 1/08.)  So, if these nodules prove to be cancer, then I have lung cancer and it probably isn't from my thyroid.

However, I am very puzzled that so many post-Thyroid cancer folks here also have lung nodules!  I was told that most of the population has some type of nodule on their thyroid.  I want if it is the same for the lungs?  Maybe we are all finding them because we are all going to the doctors for our thyroid cancer!

Don't know but I wish everyone luck here!  Does ANYONE else ever get tired of being told, "Oh....thyroid cancer?  How lucky for you because if IS the most treatable form of cancer!"  Well, it is the "C" word!  And, the "C" word is bad no matter what form you have!  Just venting.......

I am sorry to hear about what both of you are going through.  I am almost at the two year mark from surgery and getting ready for an RAI and scans next month.  I have had pain in my abdomen for almost a year.  It is predominately onthe right side and goes above the belly button.  I had a check xray last nov. 07 and all was fine.  my WBC has climbed to over 11,000 the last three - four months.  my dr. is not sure about the pain, but I am definitely talking with him about a CT scan of my entire abdomen and lungs as soon as possible.  I know this sounds weird but what is a PET scan?  how is it different from a CT scan.  Good luck to both of you

Two years of being hypo or hypo, multiple surgeries and treatment later and I still get the "at least it ONLY thyriod cancer".  Mom had brain cancer during this time, was treated and is in remission in less time than my "easily treatable" cancer.

I also have a lung nodule, docs kept telling me not to worry, which was fine, as long as we kept monitoring it, which I INSISTED upon.  Doc now wants a scan in a few weeks, after my nexr RAI treatment.

Lung nodules seem to be a wait and see kind of thing.  Until they start screaming "I'M CANCER, MORON" there's nothing much to be done.

Keep an eye on it and MAKE your docs keep an eye on it, no matter how bored they get.

There seems to be a lot of us suffering with lung nodules without our knowledge, i had a TT in March 2006 followed by RAI in Aug 2006. Thought everything was going well, my TSH has always been 0.01 and my TG undetectable. In November 09 i found a lump in my neck i went to my GP and was sent to the Oncologist. I was sent fo an US scan in January where they found tissue in my thyroid bed, i had a biopsy on both the lump and tissue  and was told the Pap cancer had returned. I was then told that they thought the RAI i had in 2006 looked as though it hadn't worked.

I was asked to go for an MRI and CT scan whilst they arranged for further surgery. I went back to the DR office in Feb 2010 to be told i have multible nodules in both lung but they were unsure what they were. They then sent me for a high dose of RAI in March but yet again there was no uptake on the full body scan. I have just gone through radical neck dissection where they removed 29 lymph nodes and 9 of those were positive for cancer.

I have had my follow up CT scan to see if the nodules have grown on Friday 02.07.2010 i am now waiting for the results i will keep you all informed.

It sounds like what I am going through. They think I am iodine resistant. I went through two rounds of RAI since 2008 and my cancer is back in the same area of my neck. I am scheduled for a neck dissection in 1 1/2 weeks.  When you are resistant, your options are narrowed. So they are hoping to get everything with surgery. My tests show that it's still confined to my neck.
