Survival Rate

Why is the baseline survival rate associated with 5 years?  Secondly, if one reaches the 5 year survival mark, does that mean that you are cured or that your percentage of having the cancer come back is diminished?

We were told that if my husband survives and still has a clear MRI at the 5- year mark the chances are finally in his favor of it not returning.  He has Primary CNS, non hodgkins of the brain.  Good luck to you!
