I had my first cervical conization performed in April.  My results came back stating that it may beyond one of the margins....but my doctor believes that the corterization they did after the procedure may have killed any abnormal cells that went beyond the margin.  So now I have to go back in 3 months for another Pap and biopsy just to make sure.  My question is what hapens if the abnormal cells are still there?  I am 32 and have not had any children yet.....is it common to perform a hysterectomy if the abnormal cells are still there?

What kind of conization did you have? Laser, LEEP, or cold knife? Where were the positive margins located? And what kind of positive margins did you have?

The first step that will definitely answer your questions and help you is to look at all of the lab reports. This will tell you what kind of dysplasia you had, where it was located, how extensive it was, and if it's in the endocervical glands. It will also tell you if the positive margins were CIN I, II, or III, as well as where the positive margins were located.

If you require additional treatment, it depends, once again, on how extensive the dysplasia is. Obviously, cryosurgery is not a good option, but you still have several choices. It sounds like you may also want to get a second opinion, just to be on the safe side.

Hello. I too had a conization in March that produced positive margins. I went in for treatment on CIN II but what was found was CIN III and a small specimen of stage 1 Cervical cancer. Needless to say, it was really scary and distessing. I'm 38 and had just started trying to get pregnant for the first time. I was referred to a wonderful oncologist who performed a second cone. The results came back and there were more bad cells but this time, the margins were clear! I have to go back in August for a follow up pap but should be cleared at that time to start babymaking. He considers me "cured" but there's always a chance of recurrence so I'll be closely monitored for a bit. It sounds like in your situation, they are going to watch you carefully which is much better than having to have a second cone and good news that hysterectomy wasn't mentioned! Good luck!
