Subject: TT Surgery... Dermabond Anyone?
Date: 05/29/2008

Hi everyone,

My surgeon closed my insicsion with dermabond which has been covering my wound for 8 days now.  I still have pain at the site - it's extremely tender.  I read about everyone having stitches removed, tapes removed, etc. and it seems as though I'm just not getting any air to my wound and I think that's the trick for it to heal.

Does anyone have experience with dermabond or am I the first test dummy for this particular clusure method?!?

Blessings,

Monica

I had that too.  They called it a plastic surgery closure.  The glue stuff came off pretty quickly for me.  I couldn't help picking it off, it felt so odd.  I was pretty happy with it.  I saw another lady at the endo office who had stiches, and it looked alot worse then mine.  It should heal just fine.  Mine took about two weeks to completly come off.  Yes, it hurt for a long time, 8 days isn't a very long time.  Give it a little bit longer,  good luck.

I agree with the OP. I had Dermabond for both of my surgeries and it has an excellent healing response. The skin is much less traumatized since there are no stitches or sutures to remove. Mine came off completely within 2-3 weeks both times (I also could not fight the urge to pick at it). :D

It will be tender for a while. I especially noted it with hot water in the shower or scraping my shirt across it. Just be patient and it should heal up very nicely. I am 6 months out from my last surgery and you can hardly see my scar and it is quite recessed into my neck.

If after a couple of weeks you still have severe redness and/or any type of lumps/bumps with discharge, I would see your surgeon. You should already be on antibiotics though that would fight off infection.

Hope you get to feeling better soon!

Hi, I had sutures to my incision, which had to be removed later. I work in an O.R. and we use dermabond everyday.  It is a great product and works well.

I just wanted to add that healing by air is a fallacy.  I work for a dermatologist and he always has patient's cover their wound after surgery until healed, but I developed an infection in the site and had to use an antibiotic powder for ten days.  I had a lot of redness and like small blister formation.  The powder worked almost immediately but I continued to use it for ten days.  So if you are also experiencing a lot of redness I would contact my doctor.  Most likely however it just needs more time.

I had the Dermabond as well.  I had never even heard of it but I was happy not to have stitches.  It all peeled off within two weeks.  It is still a little tender every now and then--(over 10 weeks out) like when something touches it--but for the most part it is healing well.  I also had sutures on the inside that my ent surgeon took out after a week--just a snip/snip on both sides and it pulled out.

I was told by my endo that some people just continue to have good and bad days with their incision sites and swear they can predict the weather by the way the scar feels.  It just takes time for it to heal--it is a very invasive surgery if you think about it.....I think you would know if something were really wrong--like it was infected or something or if it bruises up call your doc because it could be a delayed hematoma or something.

Take care.

By the way...I was also told that I could start rubbing vitamin E oil on the scar after the Dermabond comes off--being careful not to pull or stretch the skin.  It is also important for all of us to keep a sunblock of at least SPF 30 on the scar while out in the sun.  Otherwise it could cause the scar tissue to become discolored.

I also had dermabond and saw surgeon I think 1 or 2 weeks post-op and he took some kind of wet cloth and wiped it off.  My insision looks awesome so be grateful you got that opposed to stitches :)  I hope you are doing well now.

I find this discussion on dermabond interesting; hadn't heard of it.  My surgeon promised to hit my crease and he hit it head on.  My stitches were internal with some tape strips on the outside for a week.  They came off mostly on their own and my surgeon pulled the others off in less than a minute.  I never had to have my stitches removed.  It has been 2 1/2 months and my neck is back to normal; no discomfort or pain.  If you didn't know I had the TT, you wouldn't even notice the scar.  My surgeon did say to keep your neck mobile.  I did neck exercises and am back doing yoga.  My range of motion is back to normal; I think the exercise definitely helped.  I do use 50 sunscreen on the scar since I live in Florida.  I might also suggest using Vitamin C serum.  it is great for repair and healing.  I've always used it on my face but found it's great on cuts, scrapes, acne and now I found it's wonderful on scars.

Good luck!
