My dad has been through hell and back this last year fighting throat cancer. After the feeding tube was removed and he got back to swallowing on his own we have not been able to ge him to gain weight.

Any suggestions at all????

Go to any sporting goods store that caters to weight lifters and body builders (you may have to use Google to find one in your area). They have all sorts of protein/weight gain shakes and products that you can use to supplement your dad's diet. Just keep pumping him full of calories but remember, get your calories from the right kinds of fats and nutrients. You still have to watch cholesterol levels and such. You don't want him to have those kind of issues on top of what he's been through.

Good Luck!

Looking4hope,

You can also be a little creative and make up some shakes for him. One that I would make for myself consisted of  8 to 12 oz of 2% milk, one banana, and one Klondike bar ( the one that says no sugar added ) and blend. Sometimes I'd add some sugar free chocolate syrup.

Another little treat that I make for the evening is a piece of marble pound cake in a bowl with fruit cocktail or peaches and coolwhip on top.

My Best to everyone

Adapted from a recipe from my cancer nutritionist:

1 1/2 cups "fortified milk"

1 or 1 1/2 envelopes Carnation Instant Breakfast ( i use vanilla)

3-4 scoops vanilla ice cream

2 tbsp ( or to taste) Dove dark chocolate syrup

2 tbsp glutamiine powder

1 1/2 tsp instant coffee ( optional, just use in the morning)

Run it in a blender, makes 2 12 oz glasses, probably about 800 calories at least.

( fortified milk= 1/2 gal whole milk and 2 cups dried milk, blend it up and keep in a pitcher in the fridge)

I have been eating solid food for a while now, but I still have these for breakfast every day while I work the crossword.

You couls also make it with some fruit. I bought some frozen berries the other day but havent tried them yet. I have been trying to gain weight too, I lost 45 pounds during my treatment for tonsillar cancer.

Best wishes,

Mike

a tip we got from my guys nutritionist was to add a couple of tablespoons of canola oil to any blender drink we made...it added calories but didnt change the taste.

best wishes.

My wife poured vanilla milk shakes with two packets of Carnation Instant Breakfast down me at least twice a day.  I too tried with banana..tore up my stomach...with chocolate syrup..also tore up my stomach.  My Carnation of choice was the vanilla.  It worked wonders for me at a time I didn't want anything to eat.

He'll gain weight if his system accepts it.  Good luck.

Mike
