Subject: need help on how to prevent bowel blockage with colon cancer!!
Date: 05/30/2008
My husband has been having trouble with getting backed-up and vomiting bile every 2 or three weeks. This last one was bad and he is in the hosp now on the stomach tube. He seems to be getting better now and it's a good thing because he is too weak for surgery. This is why he can't gain weight and keeps getting sick. I hope the treatment at the hosp will help this from happening again. Any suggestions would really be appreciated. he has had 5 chemo treatments so far but this is really messing him up. Thought I was going to lose him. Don't want him to go through this again. He's been through SO MUCH already!!!!!!

My Dad is on steady doses of colace (stool softner) and Phillips capsules (laxative) everyday as well as Benefiber... this helps keep "it" thin and going through.  We adjust the doses as necessary, but typically three colaces a day and one to three Phillips and three doses of Benefiber in his drinks daily.  Of course always ask your doctor before doing anything!  My Dad had to have the NG tube once and HATED it!

Thanks for the reply. Terry came home sunday and felt real good and now (tues) he's throwing up bile again. The doctor said it is better to get rid of it. I sure hope he doesn't have to go back in. He was in twice last week! I just got phillips for him and he takes miralax. He really hasn't even ate anything solid yet.Mashed Potatoes last night. Maybe that did it?????????

When my Dad did not eat for ten days he still had lots of bile movements to our amazement, but Dr told us that is normal and your body makes its own waste.  My Dad ended up with bad reflux and diagnosed with Barrett esopagus now too and started Nexium which has greatly improved a lot of his symptoms of fullness, nausea, not eating, etc.  I would certainly press for answers as you are your best advocate as the doctors just have so much going on they sometimes don't pay as much attention as they should.

I have colon cancer and I use colace every other night and miralax every night.  As far as his food,  I got to the point, I blended everything before I ate.  Kind of like baby food.  That way my body didnt have to work so hard to digest it.  I even blended a hamburger.  Looked awful, but hey if you are hungry.  Potato soup was the best.  But I added carrotts , onions.   stay away from cheese etc.  boy big mistake.

I pray he will get better,  I just got out of the hospital due to anemia and I have fought for 8 years, 57 now,  If this chemo doesnt work,  I have about a year.  But I simply do not have to time to die,  I have a new grandson.   God bless you

Hi, I had a lot of constiptation during chemo. I found out that my oncologist was giving me anti-diahreah meds with my chemo!

One time I was so blocked I had to take the prep stuff they give you for colonoscopy! Just awful!!!

So please check with the dr. to be sure you know everything they are giving him and the side effects for each. And ask dr. what you are allowed to take. I take colace 3 times a day for the first 3 days of chemo, then nothing as diahreah sometimes happens on 4th day.

I don't use any fiber stuff. It gives me pain and discomfort.

I think everyone is different and you will need to find what works for him. And you may need to adjust depending on diet and meds changes. What works today, may not work next week.

Great attitude....I know the devil couldn't stand to have me in hell and I know God isn't ready for me, so I guess everyone on earth is stuck with me for a while.  :-)
