Elevated Liver Enzymes

Over the last few years, I have gone to doctor after doctor, including a GI specialists, to find out why I keep showing elevated liver enzymes. I've had a lot of blood work, ultrasounds, ect and nothing! I'm getting very frustrated at this point.

They aren't as high as I have seen some post on here. They go up as high as 150-180 in that range. Mysteriously, they tend to come right back down to the lower side of normal without doing a thing. The same for when they increase...there's no apparent reason (alcohol, meds, ect).

I generally feel ok. I have some periods where I'm just extremely tired, have no motivation, can't concentrate or think clearly (literally going into a 'trance'), forget within seconds something just repeated to me, feel like I've been run over by a MAC truck, constantly show a low-grade temp of around 100. I have also been known to run fevers of 102-103 without explanation as well.

Any ideas, or help here????

Anything would be appreciated!!!

Insist that your doctor does a ct scan of the liver.  It's the only way to tell definitively if you have cancer or not.  The earlier you catch it the better.  This is one of the hardest cancers to treat.

your story sounds very similar to mine. it started when i got glandular fever and my liver enzymes were elevated they brushed it off to be glandular hepatitis with no investigation. that was last march and after having numerous of blood tests and many different doctors, finally in february i got an answer. a new docter wasnt satisfied with the response from all the others when they just said they didnt no so he sent me for an ultrasound which showed something but they couldnt be sure till they had a ct scan. they found i have fibrolamellar hcc, its liver cancer and has spread to my lymph nodes. pretty much my entire liver is taken up by the tumor and im on a chemotherapy called sutent at the moment. i get scans done every 3 months and the whole case is being followed by ct scans they are the best way to determine whats going on so i really recommend u get one one for piece of mind at least but i hope you are ok and nothing too seriously.

I agree with the others.

My mother had lost weight, complained of digestive problems and fatigue and the doc's shrugged it off for months.

She had a CT scan and it showed cancer in the liver.

I pray for you and hope for the best.

Please keep us posted!

First, I completely agree with the suggestion to have a CT scan done - it's the most useful test to see if you're dealing with a serious liver problem or not.  You can also do an ultrasound, but it's not nearly as good as a CT.

One other thing though.  Besides liver cancer, I also have a genetic liver disorder called Gilbert's Syndrome.  It's pretty benign - it doesn't lower your life expectancy or cause serious problems - as far as we know.

It DOES cause my bilirubin levels in my blood to go up and down all the time though (bilirubin is one of the things they test your blood for to make sure your liver is healthy).  A typical bilirubin reading for me is around 44, but it can go up into the 70s sometimes too.  For a normal person, 20 is considered high.  I'm not sure, but maybe there are other liver conditions that might explain what you're going through.

Of course, like the others said, please have a CT scan ASAP just to be sure it's not something serious.
