It's too late for thyrogen now, but if you have to experience RAI again, keep it in mind.  It's been used, under controled study, for 20+ years.  It was approved by the FDA for all in December 2007.  Just like anything else, many doctors are slow on the uptake..  Luckily my surgeon and internist told me about it so I had time to study and make some decisions.  I found my endo was very educated on it, most of his associates in his office already used it, but he had not personally used it yet; I became his first.  When you are reading the posts from a few weeks back, I am the one who called all of the biggest cancer centers in the midwest and found that they have been using thyrogen exclusively for years.  You do not have to go hypo, it's two simple shots given before RAI and has very few side effects.  I had no side effects what so ever.  It is wonderful and it is sure to replace the old school method in all major hospital and cancer facilities; if it hasn't already!

As far as isolation, I was surprised to see some went to the hotel also.  You are generally warned not to do that as it puts all of the personnel in danger of exposure.  It also can endanger patrons who stay in the room after you.  I stayed in my master bedroom/bath alone and away from the family.  That's the best thing to do unless you have the opportunity to stay in a family's or friend's place in their absence.

Hope this info helps you.  Hang in there, the two weeks will pass faste than you think they will.  Try to find a relative and/or friend to make some of the food for you.  Have them get non-iodized salt and seasoning substitute, fruit, oatmeal, veggies, nuts, raisins etc.  Remember you can eat meat and chicken in moderation; I had it daily.

You're going to get through this too!  Just ask for help if you need it!

I wrapped my tv remote in saran wrap, used paper towels whenever I could to cut down on washing, had latex gloves for my computer and lights, used paper plates cups and forks and knives.  I put a sheet over all chairs that I sat in.  When my husband wasn't home, I sat outside on the patio; sheet over the seat.  As soon as I woke up each morning, I took a shower, stripped the bed, and threw my clothes, nightgown and bedding in the wash.  I took 3 showers per day, washed my clothes and bedding everyday.  I kept my dirty clothes in a trash bag.  When I left the room to get food etc. I wore latex gloves to make sure everyone was protected.  I washed the bathroom down everyday, flushed three times after every use and let the water run in the sink after use for a few minutes.  I threw out my trash bags everyday.

When I was done, I took a shower, washed down the entire bathroom, threw out all trash, changed the sheets one more time, washed all remaining clothes, cleaned all of the furniture in the room and ran to my husband for a big hug; no kiss though.  I waited a week for that!! :)

Just try to cover and/or wash everything you can.  Use paper products wherever possible; it makes it so much easier for you.  Use trash bags for everything; just safer.

Just remember, you don't have to stay couped up if no one else is in the house.  One of our posters took walks during the day when there was no one around.  Should be perfect weather for that.  Just don't greet anyone and if you encounter neighbors, keep your distance.

Let me know if I can be of any further help.  Just think of isolation as ME time; relax, and enjoy the down time.  Hopefully you won't feel so sick from hypo hell.

Does anyone know if quinoa is ok to eat? I made some tonight to eat with some steamed veggies and steak with garlic and non iodized salt on it. I actually feel full and fine from my first day. Banana, apple, pineapple, pasta, peanut butter, steak, veggies, that is lots of food! On another note, I was told by the nuclear medicine dept at ucla that i have to keep all of the clothes i wear the first day of RAI in a bag along with the paper goods and plastic goods i use for those 5 days. They said i have to keep it stored for 2 months before throwing it away. Is that insane??????

Make sure that peanut butter is salt free.  You would need special peanut butter.  Also, if you make sauce for your pasta, it too has to be iodine free; recipes in the book if you need them.

I had heard about not throwing out your trash.  But my nuclear guys didn't say anything, so I bundled them and threw them out.  The thing is, most doctors say all of this seclusion stuff is just percautionary.  If you were really a big threat, they'd keep you locked up in a tent at the hospital!  So I think alot of this is just use your head and common sense.

I feel your pain.....did the hypo thing last summer and was absolutely misserable!  Just remember, this will pass and be over before you know it.

Go back on this board and read some of the posts regarding RAI isolation....all really good stuff.  My reply has more to do with LID diet.  I just did that ffor the second time for my 1-yrs scans in April (although I used Thyrogen rather than going hypo, my endo wanted me to do the diet too).  I ran across a couple of really good things I wanted to pass along.  Although I used the cookbook a bit, so many of the recipes required some extensive "cooking" and I didn't always want to do that.

 1.  In the freezer section at the store there are frozen shredded hashbrowns with zero salt....zero seasonings ... just shredded potatoes.  I used them with asst. veggies and egg whites to make a kind of skillet dinner....it was quick and easy and I had it more than once a week!  You can add just about anything to it!

2.  I also made a kind of pasta salad using spiral pasta and asst. raw veggies.  (Bought the cut up veggies in the salad bar of the super market and just added it to some cooked pasta.)  Made my own vinegar and oil dressing with my favorite spices and it turned out really good.....carried it for lunch to work a bunch of times because it keeps in the frig really well!  If only I could have added some cheese!   :O)

3.  I made a muffin recipe from the cookbook to have for breakfast with some fruit every day....I don't know if I'll ever be able to eat another muffin!  The recipes were OK but I thought they were pretty heavy in sugar and oil....not my favorite, but edible.  Breakfasts were hard for me because I take my synthroid as I head out the door to work every day and then couldn't eat anything for an hour.  What can you bring to an office for breakfast that falls within the LID guidelines?  Muffins!  Banana!  Every day for weeks.....yuk.

Hope these help a little!          SUE
