is it possible for a 19 y.o. old to have leukemia? i mean, it's common in children and adults with ages 55 and above. i just want to know if it's common or rare at the age of 19.

thanks for the response!

yes it is possible, but not common.  Cancer in children and adolescents is rare. The most common leukemia occurs in only one of every 29,000 children in the United States each year.

some general symptoms of leukemia include fatigue (from anemia), infections (from neutropenia) and bleeding (from thrombocytopenia).  The bleeding is usually more of a bruising, frequently little red dots under the skin.  It may look like a rash.  A CBC can reveal some of these abnormalities, but a bone marrow biopsy is usually needed to diagnose.  Since you are concerned, I would check with your doc.

It's not as common as older people, but yes it can happen.  I was 15 when I was diagnosed with AML, I've been in remission for 12 years.  As far as bleeding yes, it is one of the symptoms, I've had bloody noses quite a bit in the hospital.  Anyways, if you need more info let me know.
