Subject: Lost taste buds for a shorter time?

I was wondering if there was anyone out there who suffered less than the average 4-6 weeks of a lost sense of taste.  I first loss my ability to taste salty things a little over a week ago (about a week after RAI) and then I lost my ability to taste anything sweet.  What a bummer!  My RAI dose was 125, so if anyone regained their ability to taste faster than 4 weeks, I would be interested to know what your dose was as well...Thanks!

My dose was 100 and the taste buds thing lasted for about a month.  It was really a bummer because after being on the LID for three weeks all you wanted to do was eat after it.

My Dosage was 108. I had RAI on 5/16 (about 4 weeks ago). I haven't lost any taste-bud powers... knock on wood. I hear that for some people it happens later, although I don't know how that works. RedStar

I just finished my 5th week and it's getting better.  I had a few bad weeks where it was horrible to eat.  Now, the tin taste is mild.  Tastes are getting through.   I did some reading and they say that calcium helps it.  So I started taking a little bit more calcium each day and that's when it started to improve.  Coincidence??  My levels have always been ok, but I did it anyway.

hello  =)

had 150mci on 5/30 and lost taste on 6/6.  I can still taste some stronger things and sweets (chocolate!), but it seems like no 2 days are the same.  I gave up on the lemon drops because my mouth hurt so much that the lemon drop was too big (and too irritating) to be in my mouth.  Ibuprofen has helped the pain quite a bit!  Of course the most helpful thing is all the support from this board.  you are all wonderful.

My RAI was 150 and I did lose my taste for several weeks.  My mouth was so dry (and sometimes still is when I try to eat crackers).  The taste buds snapped out of it and all is well.  I think through all of this ordeal, we all have learned that everything takes TIME!  This board is awesome!  Tara

I just had 125 dose of RAI on 6-10-08.  This is my third time.  I never lost had a problem with my buds but this time... "ugh!"  Thank you all for posting your experiences-- I was scared the buds were gone for good.

Has anyone had more than one radiation treatment and what does your doctor say about "why" this happens?

I totally lost all taste.  That happened maybe on day 3 or 4 after RAI, I think.  It was subtle at first, I could still taste strong flavors, now, absolutely nothing.  I was even goofing around, playing with different foods to see if anything had flavor.  I had out wasabi, my hubby's favorite candy, fireballs, hot sauce, and nothing.  It is so weird!  Every liquid is like water.  Food, I don't even want to eat.  Seems like a waste of time and energy if you can't taste it.  I guess it is a good time to go on a diet and lose all the hypo water weight!  I could eat a salad or a steak, all tastes the same, like nothing.  I hope this ends soon, it is making me crazy!  I only had 100mCi, so I thought I'd skate through with no side effects, wow, wrong answer!  I do have the burning mouth sensation, too, and the baking soda and water mix helps a ton.  I just swish that around in my mouth every time I think of it, it makes a big difference.  Oh well, this too shall pass!
