Subject: Bad Pap After Leep Procedure
Date: 07/18/2005
I have been dealing with cervical issues for years. On and off bad paps. Two and a half years ago (March 03) I had a another bad pap when I was 6 weeks pregnant. I was referred to another gyn and had colposcopies with biopsies every three months throughout my pregnancy. They gradually kept getting worse until it came back as carcinoma in situ stage 0. I had a LEEP done in January 05 and was told this would take care of everything. The pathology report came back with clear margins.

I had a follow up pap in April 05 and that was normal. I was so relieved. That is until I received the call today that my next three month pap from last week came back showing mild A-typical cells again (this is how I started out before.)

I'm 33 and have four child. I'm done having babies and refuse to have another LEEP. I had the LEEP done in the office and the procedure itself wasn't bad but the cervical block was AWFUL. I thought I was dying of a heart attack and I'm not going through that again.

So, I guess my questions are: What would be the next step to fixing these abnormal cells before they turned to cancer again? Would a hysterectomy correct the problem (do the remove your cevix?)

I'm at my wits end. I've been in stir ups every three months for 2.5 years and I just want to put this ordeal behind me. I want to find the permanent solution, which obviously wasn't the LEEP.

Any advice?

Tami

I just read your post and had to share this with you.
I have 4 children also and I was about your age when I kept getting back abnormal pap smears also.
I went to a Dr. McWherter in Ft. Worth Tx back then. He is wonderful but hard to get in to see because even a pap smear has to be scheduled a year ahead of time. He is that booked with patients that have used him for years.
I can't say enough about this doctor because of his advise.
I had several procedures over years for abnormal pap smears when I went to this dr.
He told me to simply take vitamin e and I would no longer have abnormal pap smears.
That was 10 years ago and I followed his advise and NO abnormal pap smears since.
I take a regular multi vitamin (kroger brand) and an extra vitamin e each day.
It is a cheap solution and ended my problem.
You could try this for a month or so and see for yourself, go back and get a test and please let me know if it works, should you try this.
Such a simple solution.
Hope this works for you too!

I, like you, am a mother of 4. Also, with my last pregnancy in March of 2003 I had a pap showing abnormal cells. They performed a colposcopy during my pregnancy in April 2003. My child was born in September 2003 and I was told to schedule a leep for my follow up. I was scared, and although I am a nurse and know better, I never went back (I also wasn’t happy with my drs bedside manner.) in march of this year I finally went back to new gyn this time- whom is absolutely wonderful- my pap showed high grade precancerous cells. I had a colposcopy in April which confirmed this finding in 3 areas of my cervix. I had a leep done in June and the tissue was sent for pathology. At my two week follow up they informed me that the pathology showed high grade cells on the outside of the excised areas. I went in again last thurs 7-21-05 for a repeat pap and colposcopy with intraepithelial biopsy. My doctor informed me that he is pretty sure he got all of it when he cauterized after leep but my pathology results should be back today. When I questioned if the next ste4p would be a cone biopsy, he told me my cervix was too short for that, maybe a hysterectomy. I am very scared. I don’t plan on having any more children, but I don’t like having the option taken away from me. Besides, I am still only 33- I am young yet!

I can not completely relate to all three of you however I do want to say that I believe that your children are wonderfull blessings. If you have found out that you will have to have hysterectemy I feel for you because I know that after I have my first child I too will have to have one. All I can say is that you are well blessed with children and loving families. I too am scared of having the surgery. I am going to see if I can keep at least one of my ovaries for estrigen. I do not wish to be on pills the rest of my life. I do know of someone that had this surger and had everything taken out. She does not used the estrigen pills but takes it naturally thru vitamins. This is something that I will be discussing with my doctor at my fallow up in early September. I want to know all of my options. I have no problem having just one child but I dont like having the option taken away from me so early ( well before I am 30). I am going to try this vitamin thing that was mentioned in this post line. If it works that will be great. I have been meaning to take more vitamins anyways. Anything to stay trim for my wedding next year. I wish everyone the best of luck.

I too, have had 2 LEEPs in the past 2 years. The last one with clear margins but I have not had the follow-up pap yet so we will see...

I am not standing by idly though or counting on prayer or the LEEP. I am working with a holistic doctor in NYC who has what he calls the "abnormal pap diet" as well as an intensive vitamin regimen. I am happy to share it with you if you arent able to get to him yourself, although the vitamin/nutrient are somewhat taylored to me persoanlly based on an extensive urinalyis. apparently my body is a bit out of whack in the sense that my levels of certain things are perfect for helping those abnormal cells to flourish.

the biggest things tha you might want to consider immediately: reduce stress (well thats a toughy but at least add in some yoga), eat soy everyday (tofu, edamame, or ultrameal for a shake (powder you buy online). I am also taking like 25, 000 IUs of vit A a day, multi viatmin, high doeses of folic acid and selenium, vit C 500 3 times a day and some betacarotene supplement (chlorotene).

email me and i am happy to give you more specifics and let you know in a few months if it works based onb my next pap. i find it infuriatign that your avg gyb knows nothing about how lack of folic acid, etc can inc. risk!!! so i am happy to share what i now know!

Hello. I am about to go for my second LEEP procedure within 2 years also. I had cryosurgery performed prior to the LEEP, which was unsuccessful. I am extremely worried, because I am only 20 years old. I would love to hear more about your experiences with this "abnormal pap diet".

I had the LEEP done almost a year ago and I just got another bad PAP. They are doing more tests to be sure but I was very interested in your bad PAP diet. CAn I get more information on that? I would apreciate it. Thank you.
