Canine TCC - Piroxicam

My dog just started on Piroxicam for TCC treatments yesterday and is now having some blood present when she urinates. Does anyone know if this is a common side effect? My vet won't be back in the office to call until Monday and I am concerned. Thanks for any feedback on this...we have planned to do surgery in the next week or so, and hope this will not alter that decision.

Response is late as your post is dated 6/14, but no, Peroxicam does not cause blood in the urine. Blood in the stool, yes, that's why most dogs on Peroxicam are also on Pepcid, Carafate etc. The med is very caustic on their tummies. Blood in the urine is related to the TCC. Some dogs experience it from day one, some experience it rarely within the disease process, and some dogs experience it in the latent stages only. Regardless, each animal responds differently to treatment. Best of luck to you and your Fur-Baby. Karen

If you live in California, my vet has done wonders and they specialize in cancer. My Nene for 1 year is doing great, and everyone I talk to at the clinic (patients parents/owners) are amazed how their animals (of all kinds) do after treatments. This clinic is located in Ventura, CA...VMSG 805-339-2290, they only treat animals with needs. I love my regular vet, but they did not offer up this place, my daughter had heard great reviews, I called them and so far so good. I met people from northern Ca, staying in town just to get their pets treated, cause it sometimes can be 3 times a week, depending on the issue. I am lucky it is only 30 minutes from my home. I think they have better results with animals because they do not fall into the guidelines of human BS and they know and remember my Nene soon as we walk in. Hope this can help any one who may have a similar terrible situation. Shillalah

Here is my story...We thought Mariah had a bladder infection and finally we were given the news that she had TCC.  We were referred to Dr. Dean Cerf from the Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital.  Mariah’s case was way worse than expected but we went ahead with the surgery on 6/19 and  Dr. Cerf said it was the worse case he’s has seen to date and that he feels that she wouldn’t have made it pass next week.  He did warn us that the last dog that was this bad had to be put down within 24 hrs due to complications but the next 3 did make it so he told us to pray hard.

He called later that evening to tell us that “someone upstairs was listening” because she recovered so well that he thinks she didn’t know she even had surgery!  She bolted out of her crate, took a walk, & was wagging her tail.  He expressed that he was secretly worried that he would lose her on the table & is amazed & shocked on how good she looks.  I spoke to him this morning and he said that she is his miracle girl…she looks better that some dogs look after a week in recovery!   He begged us not to get our hopes too high but he said even for himself…he’s thrilled…she is a tough girl!

She was in the hospital for 1 week and has been loving life at home since.  We have follow up visits on the 21st (ultrasound) and she’s having the “laser/scope” procedure done again.  Hopefully there will be no tumor to laser off!!  I appreciate any prayers we can get!!

Dr. Dean Cerf is Mariah's angel...anyone who has a furbaby who has TCC, please reach out to him.  Miracle worker is not enough of a description.

I am so happy you guys got some good news. I hope the best for ya'll. Unfortuantely my poor Winnie gave up her fight on June 22nd. We were hoping for surgery, but she started having problems breathing and my vet did a chest xray. The cancer had already spread to her lungs. I could not bear to put her down that Saturday morning. We took her home and I had one last night with her. She died in my lap the following Sunday morning. It was one of the most painful experiences I have ever had to endure. But she was in so much pain. I was going to have to have her put to sleep the following Monday. I think somehow she knew how painful that decision was for me to make, so my girl went early on her own. I was there when she took her last breath. It could not have been a better passing, if there is such a thing. I think she felt I was right there by her side. I know my girl is in a better place now and have to believe that. I wish you the best and anyone else who's pet is suffering from TCC. It is an awful sickness.

I actually did the unthinkable! A week after this happened, I stumbled upon a 7 month old puppy at the Humane Society and adopted him. I swore I would wait to grieve and give things some time. But when I found Oscar online and saw his picture, I took it as a sign. My other dog Ollie was missing his sister so much too. It was really hard on all of us. The new puppy is a handful, but has been a much needed distraction and is helping our family thru this difficult time. I think loving a new dog is sometimes the only thing that "unbreaks" your heart.

To WInnie's Mom--

I am so happy to hear the end of your story. I always want to tell this same thing to people on the board, but coming from you it so much better. It is hard to even think that any dog can "replace" the loved one that is lost. The new one NEVER does that, they just find  a different spot in your heart to live.

My Annie, who has TCC, was a replacement for a dog that was the love of my life.  When he died, I ended up at a psychiatrist's office--and then Annie came along.  She has ruled my life ever since!!

(I am wiser now as I have two dogs so I will  never have to be alone again.

Good luck to you and your new pup!

Marty
