In regards to my earlier post on multiple abscesses after surgery, has anyone ever heard of this?  I feel like my father is slipping away and he has not had treament for his cancer yet!

My husband had colon-rectal cancer in oct 04 and had surgery. 3 days later he was full of infection. We were told he had a leak that caused him to get infection thru out his body. He was rushed back to surgery and at that time had to get a permanent colostomy. He left the hospital after about 10 days and within a week or so he was very sick and we took him back to the hospital and he had two abcesses. They admitted him and he two minor surgeries to remove them. They were both in the stomach area. If I remember correctly, one was under the belly cut and it was such a traumatic time that I dont remember where the other was. He stayed in the hospital again about 8 days. Hope all works out well for you. Judy

I'm so sorry about your Dad's situation.  I remember going through the same thing with my mom after her surgery. Just remember though that the surgery in itself IS helpful-so he certainly has had something done about his cancer!  They also will most likely not even discuss chemo for many weeks.  Chemo makes the body heal much slower and especially in your Dad's case they will want him to be fully healed before anything else happens. In my mom's case it was at least 2 months before she started chemo.  Since then-each time she has had an "operative" event, the chemo (esp the Avastin) has been held for up to 2 months around the surgery. I understand the angst and frustration, but I think it sounds quite reasonable that they aren't addressing chemo right now.
