Subject: Atypical chest pain with FOLFOX

I am completing my 2nd mo of FOLFOX+Avastin. When the 5FU pump is removed at 44hrs, I have experienced unusual chest pain, which is substernal, in the upper central chest. It occurs on deep breathing and also when I lay down, either to the right or left and prone. It occurred during the last round, and I was sent to the ER, where a CT scan, ECG, and cardiac workup were all negative. The pain does not radiate, nor do I have any shortness of breath or sweating.

This round of chemo, they held the Avastin, and it occurred again, for the second time. I am unable to sleep lying down.

If I take hydrocodone + APAP, it releaves the pain enought to help me sleep.

Has anyone experienced this type of chest pain?? Or heard of this as a side effect of FOLFOX?

Comments appreciated.

after my husbands fifth round of chemo  (same stuff you are getting) he developed chest pains about 4 hrs after we got home from treatment.  called 911 - the paramedics gave him nitro in the ambulance and the pains stopped.  they keeped him the hospital for the weekend and ran all kinds of tests and never did figure out what happened.  his cancer dr thinks it was heart spasms and the nitro stopped the spasms.   it never happened again- don't really know why only that one time.

jim always had trouble sleeping the first couple of night after chemo- he had to take a sleeping pill to help him sleep.

hope this helps

Windracer,

Could it be indigestion/heartburn?  I'm on Folfiri+Avastin and I get some chest pain a few days after my treatment ends.  Next treatment try Maalox or maybe one of the prescription drugs like Nexium.  If it solves the problem, you'll know it was heartburn.  If it doesn't, you'll have to keep looking.

My husband also had chest pain, he had a ct scan, blood work and visit to the ER at 2 in the morning. The pain was so bad that they thought he was having a heart attack. The doctors had no idea why he had this pain.

Turns out that his port had been infected inside his chest. It took awhile to detect it. But by the time it was removed,  you could see the infection around the port.
