Subject: Radiation - the decision to do or not
Date: 06/26/2008

I had a double mastectomy in Nov 2007 - had 4 positive lymph nodes-a total of 14 taken out.  started chemo 1 treatment of a/c, 3 treatments of t/c then taxotere and finally abraxane.  I will be on herceptin until next January.  My oncologist referred me to a radaiation oncologist and now they say I need 6 weeks of radiation.  I have not felt right about radiation from the beginning - has anyone opted not to do radiation?

Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thank you!

Radiation is the usual follow-up after chemo.  What are you really afraid of?  Goodness, you have endured chemo which I am sure must be worse.  Research, ask questions, get several opinions, and just be proactive about your health.  I had 10 radiation treatments via a mammocite device--a tube with a little balloon on the end was inserted directly where the tumor was removed (behind the nipple).  A little seed of radiation traveled through the tube and got in there and "blasted" the area for a few seconds.  This was done morning and afternoon for 5 consecutive days.  It was exhausting--I slept a LOT.  But--it wasn't painful or horrible.  Look at all your options.  Take care!
