Where are you located?  My surgeon told me that if mine metastisized to contact him before doing anything.  There are new techniques out there that are noninvasive and very successful.  He didn't go into great detail, but I am sure it would depend on where it has spread and to what degree.  I can always put you in touch with him, but he's down in Florida.  If not, ask your oncologist and surgeon for your alternatives before making decisions.

What type of thyroid cancer were you diagnosed with?  Do you have a variant of papillary (or whatever you have)?   I have 'tall cell' which can be resistant to RAI.  I had 150 dose of RAI.  I may have to repeat.  What is your situation?

I am currentlhy in a similar situation and am going to ask doctor about PEI, which supposedly has had some success in treating mestastes of pap carcinoma in lymph nodes. PEI is injecting ethanol into affected area.
