Subject: how to choose about starting chemo now or waiting for a trial?
Date: 07/08/2008

My 47-year-old sister learned today that she is Stage 3 cholangiocarcinoma which is inoperable.   She can start Gemcitabine  this week or start a trial at the UW-Hospital Paul Carbone Cancer Center.   The problem with the trial is that she would have to wait 3-4 weeks to start the trial.  The trial is Sorafenib in conjunction with Capecitabine and Oxaliplatin.    She likes the idea of being in the trial but waiting 3-4 weeks worries her.

Can anyone describe their results with Gemcitabine for Stage 3 cholangiocarcinoma?

Anyone have any experience with Sorafenib/Capecitabine/Oxaliplatin combination?

Just looking for real thoughts from real patients.

Thank you so much.

Hi Dee,

Sorry to hear about your sister having this nasty cancer. However, I do not understand why surgery in stage 3 is not an option. A second opinion looks a wise thing to ask for!

My husband was diagnosed in April 2007 and they tried surgery. However, with him too much of the liver was infected and there were metastases, so they broke surgery off. He is still doing extremely well (in spite of the life prediction of 2-3 months) 15 months later. It is very important to immediately start a very healthy eating pattern. Lots of vitamins via fresh vegetables and fruits, no sugar at all. A very good supplement for cancer patients is Omega-3.

Up till now, chemo-treatments don't do so well on this cancer. And most of the time, the quality of life is deteriorating heavily during chemo.

I hope your sister will go for the second opinion. Don't give up hope too easily.

Kind regards,

Iris (the Netherlands)
