my mom, who i love dearly is in the icu at cancer treatment centers of america in philly and since we got here over memorial day weekend for her chemo and radiation her port became infected and now she is in real bad shape...her bronchial tube collapsed so they had to put a stint in the bronch tube and since then they have kept her in icu on propofnel and fentanal and she is out of it...i am very displeased with this hospital as the infection should have been avoided and the way some nurses act..not all as most are very loving and compassionate..but some are very mean, same with the Dr's most are "good" but one i call dr doom as he gives no hope, which is what they preach on their wonderful commercials...

in fact dr doom said that if her heart stopped they would not do any heroic messures to revive her, this ticked me off and i want to bodyslam him very baddly!

Hey There,

First off. Let me say, "I am real sorry about the shape that your dear mother is in." I have a port in my chest. I agree with you on what you said. About how there was no reason for your mother to have it get infected. It makes one wonder, that if sanitary conditions were followed correctly, how could this have happened to her?

As far as the bad attitudes on those few nurses and that Dr. Doom goes. Well, I hope that you have reported them and asked for a 'gig head' to talk to about it all. Then, I'd request (if not offered to you already) a new, excellent Dr. for your mother. I'd also want to read what they said caused the infection on your mother. But, that's me. I would not take this type of treatment at all. We're talking about the life of your dear mother here.

I pray that she comes out of this  as she needs to. Please, try and hang in there. Do what you must do. Take care of yourself, too. Hugs and best wishes to you and your mother. May God Bless, and look over both of ya'all.  As well as your other loved ones, friend.

My Very Best to You,

Rosie

Hi, First, I so hope your Mom recovers and does well, 2nd, the Doctor doesn't have a say in whether resusitation is done, YOUR MOM does and if you are her representative if she is incapacitated YOU DO. If your Mom signed a DNR then the decision was already made by her, but a Dr. has no say in that except if it goes to the courts, and that's usually to remove life support. Even then, a strict protocol has to be followed. So, did your Mom sign a DNR (on a health care proxy?). Most people who do sign one usually write in specifics to follow .  In a lot of areas (like NY) if a person signs a DNR then if their heart stops then NO resuscitation will be done, but if they are in respiratory failure then a ventilator may be placed on the patient unless a specific DNI (do not intubate- which means do not place a breathing tube in the patient and place on a ventilator) is added to the DNR or written on the DNR that the patient wishes are NOT to be placed on a ventilator or respiratory support.  What type of infection did your Mom get? Prayers to you and your Mom. Ellen

I can't believe how detached the doctors and nurses can be.  It really makes me mad!!!  When my dad was in the hospital, I felt like he couldn't be left alone because I couldn't depend on the hospital staff to help him if he needed anything!  I know that this doesn't describe all of them, but it shouldn't be any of them!

I agree with the last message.  It is not the doctor's decision to revive your mom if needed!!!  I think you should look into malpractice against them!!!

God Bless and I hope for the best for your mom!

Nikki
