Subject: what cause glioblastoma?

I had a brother diagnose with Glioblastoma grade 4. In our family he is the only 1 who had this disease. He now on radiation, chemo theraphy and also evastin and it seem like nothing help much. In our family no one had this disease. The only thing i could think of is he had been working for a company for 7 years that expose to laser radiation everyday. I don't know if with that enviroment could lead to this deadly disease or not. I also work for this company and my family suggest me to quit this job. I'm now feel very bad and for my brother and also very confuse myseft. Anyone had any idea to share??

I am so sorry to hear of your brothers diagnoses. As far as I know through reading and Mayo and other sources Gilo is just like any other of the many cancers no one knows why we have it. I do not have any of this type of Ca in my family either, father died years ago but did have colon Ca and it was removed and no problems he died from something else so go figure. I have 3 sisters and mother still living and no Ca problems and I am the youngest of all. I feel that it can be like any other cancer stress can be tough on the body does he have a stressful job or had much stress in his life. Gilo like any other Ca is like a thief in the night. Many times it just does not make any sense. I will pray for your brother and hope they find something to slow it down. Good luck

I know that this is a difficult time for you and your family but please don't lose hope.  I'm sure that some days can be very trying and confusing.  Until November when he was diagnosed with GBM grade IV, my husband worked for a chemical company for 10 years and is the only person we've heard of with a brain tumor but it makes a person wonder...

The first thing the doctors at University of Washington told us that this is one cancer that you did nothing to get. That is unless you have received heavy radiation. All GBM patients have a cell in thier DNA that is different from everyone else.

I would like to say that I was very stressed at the meeting so I may have gotten this wrong, but it is worth looking into.

Remember through Jesus all things are possible.

I don't think anyone really knows. So many cancers are a mystery, GBM more than most.

My dad's doctors said it's not hereditary. I did ask about that, fearing for myself and my brother.

I wondered about radiation and exposure to chemicals also. Many years ago, my dad and stepmom worked at a nuclear plant for awhile. Later they were trucker drivers hauling hazardous materials, including nuclear materials.  My stepmom got a rare form of leukemia, and my dad got a brain tumor. Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not.

No one really knows why people are diagnosed with GBM, and theories are just that, theories.

I was raised in SE texas, home to many refineries, and all residents were exposed to lots of petro chemicals. My uncle and my brother have both been treated for leukemia. But my brain cancer? who knows. Someone suggested my cell hphone may have been the culprit. Shrugs. again good question. I was not a heavy cell phone user.

I do think most cancers are environmentally caused, but no one really has been abe to pin down the cause of brain cancer.

My wife (dx AAIII) grew up near a copper refining plant that used heavy metal solvents. She also works in the greenhouse industry, very near a rail road yard with lots of tankers full of God knows what. Also, about a year before her diagnosis, both of us were exposed to a Styrene gas cloud because of a leaking rail road car that was going through a chemical reaction near our neighborhood. There is so much toxic waste in our worlds, it's no wonder people get sick. It seems to me that any man-made chemical that would cross the blood brain barrier would be a likely cause for brain cancer. Has this kind of specific research gone on? I often wonder if science is looking in the right places at all.

The answer to your question is complex.

1-The person's defense mechanism agains't cancer is not working properly for several factor's.

2-People are exposed to far too much radiation. Not just work related but at home with x-ray's,cell phones, and computers.Radiation is cumulative and does not go away.

3-The average American now ingest's more chemicals in one month than thier grandparents did in a year.

4-Americans as a whole do not consume amino acids nearly enough which keep thier peptide and enzyme level's in balance and that is a key cancer fighter.

5-Many American's do not have antioxidants in thier diet which help in damaged cell repair.

6-Genetic's play's a role in some Glioblastoma cases.

I hope this makes things a little clearer for you and god bless your family.

Hi there.

There is no known cause for brain tumors but alot of speculation they're linked to environmental factors.

I've been researching the cause since losing my Dad 8 years ago-- and I've met alot of people who have brain tumors who worked in chemical, or fabrication factories. So that alone has led me to believe that there's an enviromental link.

My Dad was a Machinist. He was always working with Diesel, welding, etc-- breathing all that in.

There are also many firefighters who have brain tumors.

I would suggest that you quit your job-- for your own safety. Even if there is NO link-- it's better to be safe.

Your family may carry a "gene" that makes you more susceptible to cancer so take care of yourself.

Please consider whether the CAAT diet administered under the A P John Cancer Institute in Florida. They have had some success with treating brain tumours and it does not involve chemo or radiation.
