Has anyone had their thyroid removed because a cancerous lump was found then had their thyroid biopsied and had it come back negative? My thyroid has been sent for further testing has anyone had it come back positive after a negative?

Actually, I had a lump on my thyroid for which they did a fine needle biopsy that came back negative, but the lump continued to grow.  Eventually they decided it had to come out, it was above 5 cm at that point, and when they removed it, they biopsied while I was still under, only to find out it was cancer, and proceeded to a TT while I was still under.  Is that your questions?  I'm not sure if I followed you correctly.

Lori, thank you for responding to my question. Actually the lump was diagnosed as cancerous. The lump and my thyroid were removed. But the first biopsy on my thyroid has come back negative. They are doing further testing. I have heard that it can come back positive even after initially testing negative. I was wondering if anyone else had the same experience. Your experience is close however. I have been told that it can go either way.

My mom also had thyroid cancer, however she didn't know it for about 8 years!  Over those 8 years she had what she was told was a goiter...she probably had 4 or 5 fine needle biopsies which all came back as negative.  She would have to go in about once a year or so to have the "goiter" drained...finally she just got sick of messing with it and decided to have it surgically removed.  Well while she was in surgery and they sent the "goiter" off to be tested, it came back that it was cancer!!  Talk about a shock after being told for so long that it wasn't!  Definitely threw all of my family for a loop...she ended up having another surgery about 2 years after the first one to remove some other lumps that popped up, but she is doing fine now, thank God!  If anything else ever shows up in my neck you better believe I won't be messing around with...out it will come!

Thank you for sharing. I recently have found a lump at the back of my neck. The doctor says it's a swollen lymph node. He's put me on antibiotics and ordered an ultra sound. I hope it's not connected to my thyroid cancer.
