My father is 49 years old. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in February 2008 and underwent a total gastrectomy in March 2008. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments, which are working really well. They said that there was about 12mm of tumor left and that it has since shrunk by 2mm since May 2008.
My question is...does anyone know about genetic testing for this. My fathers doctor is having him tested for the gene for stomach cancer because apparently it can be genetic and since he is so much younger then the average stomach cancer patient that it is worth getting tested and everyone else in our family also has to be tested. Has anyone else heard of this?

Hi there,

I too was tested for the gene you're speaking of, and found to have it. It's actually a mutation of a gene called cdh1.

I'm 34 years old and it is recommended that I have a prophylactic gastrectomy because of the nature of the cancer associated with this gene.

I only just found out days ago that I am positive for the gene, so I'm completely sure what I'm going to do. At this point I strongly leaning towards having the surgery.

Take care,

Tanya
