Okay, as many of you know I will be doing my 6 month scan with Thyrogen in a couple weeks.  For those of you that have done it, for the tracer dose only (not for the treatment dose), did you have to go on the LID?  My endo told me no diet for the scan, but if it is not a clean scan I will have to do the diet before more treatment.  Dies that sound right?  I just want to make sure the scan is correct.  I guess I could do the diet even if my endo doesn't think I need to.  I just would rather not.  However, I will do what I have to do to make sure it is as accurate as possible.  What do you all think?

Okay, I have done a little research on this matter.  I don't know if any of you check out the Yahoo groups, but there is a thycan one there.  Pretty good one, but lots of people there.  I find it to be a little overwelming.  Anyway, one gal there went crazy on me and told me that my endo was wrong wrong wrong!!!  That I must do the diet or I could have a false negative.  Well, that doesn't sound to good, so I guess I will go against my endo and do the diet.  What a bummer...but the best scan is what I want.   What do you all think??  Skylog

I was told that I didn't even need to do the LID for the ablation, although I did it anyway...  I think that more and more Endos are starting to lean towards not doing it, but I am certainly not the expert!  I don't think I will be doing the LID for the scan - it was pretty horrible.  :)

Hi Skylog

My husband's endo told him that he would indeed have to do the LID in prep for the tracer and scan. Since you are gathering info I just thought I would let you know about our plan. Good luck!

I was my endo's first thyrogen patient and he insisted I do LID for ablation.  However, the other doctors in his practice have been using thyrogen exclusively and do NOT have their patients do the LID.  So I think the jury is out on this one.  My endo will require it for the tracer while his partners won't.  I would rather be safe than sorry so I didn't fight him on this one!

Good luck!

I agree, I would also rather be safe than sorry for sure.  So, I guess my LID starts tomarrow.  That will give me 2 weeks before my scan.   Thanks to everyone on this one.  I was on the fence, but I think I know what I need to do now.  That way if my scan is clean, I know for sure it is not a false neg.  I will feel better that I know I did everything I could to get the best results.  You all rock!!!  Skylog

I just went back last week to have a WBS without treatment and I had to do the LID.  Told it works better with the diet.

I just took my tracer dose this morning (after getting Thyrogen injections on Monday and Tuesday) and will have my whole body scan on Friday. This is my follow up after getting an "all clear" one year ago after total thyroidectomy, and R131 ablation therapy. I have been on the LID for 10 days. I know there are a lot of mixed feelings on this one, but my endo recommended it and the nuclear medicine guys did, too. Since they see more of it than anyone, I felt they knew best. 10 days of suffering is a very small price to pay for an accurate scan, in my opinion. Good luck!

P.S. I just discovered GUYS salt free potato chips. They sure tasted good with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich made on Low Iodine bread, with organic no salt peanut butter!

Hi Skylog!  I've seen a lot of conflicting info out there regarding the LID too.  That being said, at my 1 year WBS in April using thyrogen, my endo and the nuclear med doc at the university med center where I go BOTH recommended/demanded my being on the diet for 2 weeks prior.  My endo has seen all the conflicting info too and said she's not confident enough yet to drop it......so I did it!  I guess, better safe than sorry.  I have to say I really didn't find the diet all that awful although I REALLY missed cheese and ice cream for those 2 weeks!           SUE

My endo set definitely do the LID AT LEAST for a week prior to the scan...that way your chances of the thyrogen scan are more accurate!  I am not looking forward to the diet either, but just doing it for a few days won't be too bad.  Just think of how bad it was doing the diet when you were hypo..this should be a breeze!
