We are also in Ontario. My husband also had Colon cancer stage 3.
He was operated on in February and then had to choose the chemo. The choice he was given was Capecittabine (Xeloda pills) or Oxaliplaten. The Doctors preference was Oxaliplaten.
Doctor now recommends Xeloda over the 5FU.
Less side effects and seems to work better too.
Certainly is much more convenient.
He applied for financial assistance but did not get it for Oxaliplaten - suggest you apply right away - they are quick to reply. Apparently the drug company has not got it approved in Canada so that is why it is not covered by our drug plans.
Xeloda was covered by our drug plan.
After careful consideration, he chose the Xeloda pills and it has worked out much better than we expected. There are 8 sets of 2 weeks on pills then one week off and he just finished the 7th.
The Internet has lots of information and really helped in the decison process for him.
Hope this helps.
Also in Canada.

Thanks for the information.

Having heard that 5FU is more tolerable than Oxaliplatin and that Xeloda was recommended over 5FU makes me feel even more uneasy about the Oxaliplatin.

Glad to hear he's on his 7th set.

I'm not looking forward to this. I just want to see him get better.

Thanks again.
