Subject: Avastin Trial, Low Blood Counts?
Date: 08/03/2005
Hi,
I have stage 3 colon cancer (diagnosis and op in April 2005) with no metastases. I'm on a clinical trial for adjuvant chemo ---combining Xeloda, Oxaliplatin and Avastin.
Is anyone else taking that combination? And if so have you experienced low blood counts that have delayed treatment?

I was due to start cycle 3 10 days ago but my neutrophil count remains too low (although not very low) so my treatment has been postponed. I'll have another test on MOnday.
As there seems to be little case history of people with stage 3 colon cancer taking this combination (at least here in New Zealand) I am interested to know if anyone else has had the same problem and if it sorts itself out!
Otherwise I have had few side effects- certainly nothing too troublesome. But I do understand that it assumulates so side effects may get worse.
Thanks
Coral

Bless your heart! My boyfriend has the same stage III and found out in April of 2005 that he had it. Last month JD had to get a shot that brought his white blood count up to 5000 from 1300. Now he gets a shot every monday before his treatments. THey also gave him an iron infusion that is supposed to give him more energy and help with his blood counts. He is in the avastin study with,5 FU, oxoliplatin, and Lukavorin. He is also on Emend to help with the nausia and other side affects. Good luck with your treatment and I will put you in my prayers.

Hi I read your message about the blood counts being so low, my sister also went through that, the dr. put her on a drug called neupogen, I think she had one (injection) everyday for a week, her counts went up fast, it made her bones hurt but the good benefits certainly out weighed the bad; she's on camptostar now once every 3 weeks and has xeloda for 14 days in between, it's rough she stays tired but we keep praying and keep trying, she has stage 4 colorectal with mets in the liver, they gave her 3-6 months to live in dec. and it's now aug. 2005, so don’t give up and hang on to your support system, god willing you ALL will beat this at least for a while, she doesn't talk much about it either getting info. From her is like pulling hens teeth! Good luck every one you're in my prayers

Thanks to you both for your ideas and support. I have another blood test tomorrow and if my counts are OK (hoping, hoping!) then I will get back (happily!) on that chemotherapy merry go-round.
