I haven't done it yet.  But as long as it's a tracer, which 6 month generally is, there's no isolation.  You still do the LID though.  Several posters are coming up on their 6 month so they can better tell you the instructions they have received.

I have my 6 month scan the first week in Aug.  I will get Thyrogen shots Mon. and Tues.  Bloodwork and tracer dose on Wes  Scan on Thur.  You do not have to be isolated for the tracer dose.  I am told there are little to no side effects from the shots.  The shots are in the "behind".  That part seems a little painful, but most people say it does not hurt.  My endo told me I did not have to do the low iodine diet.  However after ALOT of research I have decided to do it anyway, because it seems the majority of people do.  If it means the most accurate scan I can get I want to do everything in my power to get it.  I am not scared at all for the shots, but I am a little nervous about the scan.  I just want it to be clean so badly.  I am so ready to put this behind me.  As I'm sure you are.  Good luck-Skylog

My endo did say that i will have to do the LID 2 weeks before..which is boring but in the grand picture it is not that bad. I was told that i will have to stay arms length from my kids and no hugging for 3 days. which is the hardest for me and my girls...

let me know if this is the same for everyone...

I had RAI in February.  My 6 month check up is in August.  The only thing I was told to do is go in for bloodwork one week before my appointment.

Is this out of the ordinary?

I had the Thyrogen shots this past month for a scan. They gave me the worse headache I have ever had.  The first day I thought maybe I was getting ill but my morning I felt better until the second shot then they lasted for a week. I contacted Genzyme and it is a common side effect.  However, I had them prior to a PET Scan. I went off Synthroid for my whole body scan two months earlier and due to issues needed a PET Scan.  I don't want to do another one, but I know I will have too. The waiting is the worst part I wish they would give you results right then.  I am sure you will do fine; but be prepared with Advil or something that works on your headaches in case you get one.

This may seem like a strange question but if someone has the thyrogen shots administered and had a reaction to it is there anything that can be done?

I guess what I am asking is if there is anything preventative to be done ahead of time or anything to do about the side effects afterward to feel better?

Let's say someone did have what seems to be the worse side effect..... having the airway close up....what do they do about it?  Is it an allergic reaction?  Or does it have something to do with it being taken up into possible leftover thyroid tissue?  Anyone know?

Has anyone ever heard of it happening?

Just curious.  Thanks.  Take care.

For a serious reaction they definitely will do something.  Probably an IV of steroids of alergic conteractive medicine of some sort.  That's why they will keep you to monitor.

For the common side effects you can ask for anti-nausea medicine.  That's what a lot of people do.  Ask them ahead of time what you can take.  They may even administer it to you as a precaution if you press them.

Good Evening All,

This is my first time on this site, and I find it very useful.  I was diagnosed 5/2007 w/ RAI 7/2007.  I am currently prepping for WBS and had first injection of Thyrogen today.  After I had injection, I started to experience nausea, so I called my Endo.  The Dr. said thyrogen doesn;t have any side effects and I shouldn't be experiencing nausea.  I read your messages, and it appears as though mausea is common.

Am I crazy, or can Thyrogen make you experience nausea (kind of like the flu).

 Either way, injection two tomorow.

 Thanks for the info.
