Doc Unable to use cytoscopy

I am a 31 y/o female with a history of recurrent UTI's. I have had microscopic hematuria for the last 8 months. My IVP and cystogram were normal.

I went to my urologist for my cytoscopy. Due to severe narrowing of my urethra (which makes catherization mind-blowingly painful), he was unable to insert the cytoscope. He decided to schedule an OR to do the cytoscopy to put me under to look since it is so painful.

I am worried now, because he says he will not speculate any of the causes of my problem.  He said something about possible lesions in my urethra and that he felt resistance to the insertion of the cystoscope. The nurse repeated multiple times that my situation was "not normal". Well really? Hmm...shocking news there, eh?

His orders for my surgery include cytoscopy, bladder biopsy, fulguration and stricture repair (which the surgical nurse said that he was going to make an incision on the sides of my urethra to open it up).

What can I expect in terms of recovery? How long do biopsy results take?

I am a fulf-time doctoral student with a 13 month old child and can have little downtime (unless it is cancerous - in which case I will have to)

Surgery is not for another 2 weeks.

 Any thoughts?

hi,  i have had multiple cystos and a urethral stricture repair.  the time of the uretheral stricture repair i had a cathater for a week to insure the strictures would heal correctly.  i had at least two to three weeks of light duty in order to not strain and cause taring in the urethra.

if theres anything else you would like to know, please let me know

john
