Link between Piroxicam & Bladder Infection?

Hi!  Last week I started my Westie, Willie, on his piroxicam and tummy protectors.  He was doing quite well for a few days and then suddenly was licking himself a lot and then stopped eating.  I took him off the piroxicam thinking that it was causing the lack of appetite.  However, I then noticed that the reason he was licking himself was that there was a white discharge from his private area.  I immediately took in a urine sample to check for bladder infection.  Sure enough, Willie had one.  My regular vet is out of town but one of his partners put Willie back on Clavamox for a week.  I am wondering if anyone has continued to give piroxicam to his/her dog while treating a bladder infection.  The vet said that it was okay to use both drugs together.  However, I am concerned that the piroxicam somehow irritated his bladder thus causing the infection.  Or is it more likely that the TCC problem causes the infection and the piroxicam is not related at all?  I would appreciate any thoughts anyone has on this subject!  Thanks !

Sue

Hi Sue--

I'm rushing out the door. But yes, it's okay to give both medicines.

The TCC and bladder infections go hand in hand. I've read some people on the board have their pups on a constant low level dosage of antibiotics.

Annie has been lucky--she hasn't had any infections until just a couple of weeks ago and then it was a doozy!!!!! One course of antibiotics seemed to clear it up, but it was back again after two weeks.

The second time I was more on the lookout so we put her back on the antibiotics right away.  They clear up the symptoms for us within three days --thank goodness!!!

Good luck

Marty

Hi Marty!

Thank you so much for the information!  I'm so glad that your Annie is responding to her antibiotics for infections.  Willie's infection already seems under control.....so I'll start his piroxicam again as soon as I am sure that he is eating well.  Willie has a very sensitive stomach so all of this is an extra challenge.  However, I am determined to find a way for him to take the meds he needs to live as long and as comfortable life as possible.  All the help and info I get from those of you who are doing the same with their precious puppies is as they say "priceless"!

Sue
