Supporting a friend

I have a good friend whose dad was just diagnosed with prostate cancer. They don't know how far along it is, but he's pretty shaken up about it. I'm feeling pretty helpless, especially as I'm leaving for college on Friday. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has ideas about what I can do to help him cope/what I can say. Thanks.

Hi, Perhaps you can send him a funny card every week or so and tell him of some of your humorous experiences on campus, ask him about his days there, or that you're sending him positive thoughts. If he likes movies, maybe a subscription to netflix- humourous movies are said to be great medicine. When visiting, perhaps he'd like to get away for an afternoon or eve with you and your friend to do something away from family if all are stressed. I wish him all the best. THis thing can be beat, I've heard stories. Unfortunately my family members didn't catch it early.
