My 11 yr old dachshund Phoebe has just had a cystoscopy with biopsies and although her lab results are not back yet, the vet is almost certain she has bladder cancer.  We have just started her on Piroxicam 2 mgm daily and I am hopeful that it will shrink her tumors.  She has bloody urine and NO other symptoms!

Does anyone else have any experience with this medication?  I can't imagine what we will do without her.  I rescued her 3 yrs ago from a family that was about to take her to the pound because they didn't want her anymore after having her since she was 8 weeks old!  I have had other dachshunds before - one for 18 yrs and one for 16 yrs.  Phoebe is like a puppy in spirit.

Hi Virginia--

I'm sorry to hear about your pup.

There's a lot more information for you under the Pet Cancer section as well as a thread here in the Bladder Cnacer section (over 700 postings) where you'll find a lot about the experiences other pet owners have had.

Some find that the peroxicam upsets their pup's stomach, but that hasn't been the case for us.  My Annie has been taking it every night since her diagnosis and it's helped us tremendously.

Good luck to you.

Marty

Hi Virginia, This is Nene's mom, read my post, hope it can help you, I guess Nene must have a stomach of steel, nothing bothers her too much even the chemo was for maybe 2 days. I found giving antibiotics along with treatment stopped the leaking, tomorrow she gets a culture, cbc, chemistry, and urinalysis for bladder infection, she has been getting antibiotics when she leaks, know she needs the heavy ones, but that is all, and I am happy! Looks like she will be on the proxicam forever, as long as it does not compromise her liver, she a tough and happy girl. Good luck, email me if you need more info. Liz and Nene

Hi Virginia

If you go to the right hand top of your page, you will see "Search" with a space next to it.  If you type in TCC (short for Transitional Cell Carcinoma) you will find so many messages from well informed people that it will take you hours and hours to read through them (the majority seem to be TCC of the bladder).  I am giving you two links to begin with.  The first is one w/ almost 750 messages.  The second is one I came across and found interesting as it mentions adding in pawpaw - this is something that is frequently mentioned on the alternative board for humans - and as it states in the message it doesn't hurt and goes well w/ the med so why not try it.  It worked for the poster's pet.

Hope this helps -

I hope for Phoebe's sake and yours that it is not TCC but if it does turn out to be, you have a wealth of info from caring people who are going through the same on this web site.
