Proton vs Radiation

I am a 54 y/o male. I just had a cancerous tonsil removed and was told that I also have cancer at the base of my tongue. It's called squamous cell carinoma. I've heard alot about proton therapy and am considering looking at it with Loma Linda. I have Kaiser Insurance and have been told that they deem proton therapy as "experimental".Is there anyway I can get Kaiser to let me go to Loma Linda for this treatment under my Kaiser plan or is this something I'll have to pay for out of my own pocket? Also, if there is anyone who had the same type of cancer and was treated conventionally, I would like to hear from you and know what to expect. I have not yet been to the Tumor Board so do not know what they will prescribe for treatment.
