My husband has several sores that will not heal on his skull. They drain a milky whitish, non odorous, occasionally blood tinged, viscous fluid. When the first sore didn't heal after 4 months I made him see our family physician who sent him to a dermatologist. The Derm gave him 2 series of zithromax, 90 days of keflex and sent him for xrays and a ct scan of the head. When he read the xray he asked my husband if he had ever been shot in the head as the area of bone beneath the original sore (right side above eye at the hairline)appeared significantly thinner and less dense than the left side. He sent him in for an MRI then suggested he see a neurologist as my spouse had surgery as an infant to open a soft spot and the Derm said a Neuro was a more appropriate choice. The Neuro refused to biopy it. Both the Derm and the Neuro refused to even do a C&S on the fluid, even though it wouldn't have been any harder to obtain that the pressure of a sterile q tip swab. He was sent to an oconlogist who said it looked more like a venous lake than cancer. He too refused to collect any fluid for microscopic study or culture and sensitivity tests and referred us back to a neurosurgeon. The neurosurgeon said he wanted to put a nickle over the site and do another MRI. We have spent a great deal of our savings on the various costly consultations and almost 17 months later are no closer to an answer than before. He is currently without insurance as they say it is a pre-existing condition, relating it back to the surgery he had when he was 2 months old. He has now developed 3 more sores on the lateral skull in the temporal region, all of these new sites drain the same type of fluid, very rarely do any of them bleed. He has no pain, has lost quite a bit of weight, no loss of stregth or motor coordination, no neurological deficits that I have noticed as of yet.
Any suggestions as to what or who we should see or do next would be greatly appreciated.
Thanking you in advance,
Div

When I first realized I had a serious problem, I was living in Louisiana, no one appeared to want to make the first move, I seemed to be shuffled back and forth. My husband set me an appointment with a surgeon at the Houston Medical Center. I have been moved along from surgery to chemo, and lots of testing to keep track of where I am at with this disease at all times. If you live far away I realize this could be a problem, the medical center is known through out the world and now I can easily see why. From top surgeons to hospital staff they all do their job with knowledge and compassion.
Although lung cancer has no cure, I feel that I will get the very most out of life in the hands of these wonderful people.
