Hi, my mom is 50 years old and a heavy smoker.. For the past 2 months we have noticed a change in her voice that the best i can describe it sounds like she needs to clear her throat every time she speaks but she doesnt really need to clear her throat, she doesnt have any other symptoms that we have noticed.. Is that the change in voice that they talk about or is this prob something different?

Please get your mom to see an ENT specialist right away!  My mom had a similar problem for a year, along with an occassional earache.  After being diagnosed with a bacterial infection twice and then a viral infection, we finally talked her into going to an ENT.  The tumor on her larnyx was stage 3 and it had spread to her lymphnodes in her neck.  She is now almost finished with chemo and 12 days away from finishing radiation.  She's 62 and was a smoker and drinker for many years. Don't wait!

Please get your mother to an ENT doctor right away.  I too was a heavy smoker and I am about your mother's age.  This past November, my voice went hoarse and it stayed that way.  I finally had a biopsy and I have stage 1 cancer.  It has been a real eye opener and I have certainly quit smoking.  BUT, please make sure she gets some help.
